To ring 111

Without sounding dramatic, I think I've had a heart attack this morning. I was in excruciating pain with my chest and top of my back, cry-worthy pain. I was trying to take deep breaths and just couldn't. I was feeling hot and sweaty but I did have the heating on and was getting 2 children sorted for school so can't say for definite it's because of the pain.

It's eased massively now, there's still a niggle but I've got the children to school and just feel a bit emotional / worn out now.

Would you ring 111? Is there anything they'll be able to do? I don't fit the typical description of someone who's likely to have a heart attack so will they think I'm being dramatic?

How old are you ?
Is there any history of heart problems in your family ?

porridgecake · 15/09/2023 08:27

Yes ring them. That is what they are there for and nobody on MN can diagnose you over the internet.

DustyLee123 · 15/09/2023 08:27

The GP will be open now, why not ring them ?

DementedPanda · 15/09/2023 08:28

Yes, you need to be checked out.

ChaChaRealSmooth · 15/09/2023 08:28

I’d ring the GP.

111 will more than likely with that description tell you to go to A&E as the computer will tell them too

purplehouses · 15/09/2023 08:29

I'm 27 and yes my grandad died of a heart attack.
Tbh I didn't think a GP would be able to do much other than refer me somewhere else so thought 111 may cut out the middleman.

111 is likely to be better at triage than the gp receptionist IMO.

Do you have a walk in centre near you? I'd go straight there tbh, as soon as you mention your symptoms and the fact that it's still niggling they will probably call ambulance or tell you to go to a&e

Lockthedoorbehindyou · 15/09/2023 08:36

I'd go to A& E. The GP will definitely send you there anyway with those symptoms. Please go straight to A & E and don't faff about with a phone call. Many general practices have a message when you call them saying to get off the phone and go straight to A & E if you have chest pain.

hanka · 15/09/2023 08:39

Please do get checked but also, bear in mind gallbladder. I’ve had similar symptoms when I had gallbladder issues.

hanka · 15/09/2023 15:59

Hope you’re ok, purplehouses. How’s it gone today?

Catsafterme · 15/09/2023 16:03

If in any doubt ring bear in mind also though that you can also have a trapped nerve. I get this all the time and I believe it's one that's around the ribs and only because I've had it so many times since childhood I know it's not my heart.

It's like insanely painful sharp pain around that area but it also goes through my back between my shoulder blades. Can't breathe without it hurting and often get hot. Usually have to take a sharp breath until it eventually pops and releases.

Hope you are okay now though but always if in doubt call, better safe than sorry.

10HailMarys · 15/09/2023 16:05

It needs checking out, definitely. It actually sounds a lot like gallstones to me, rather than a heart attack, but of course anything like what you’ve described definitely needs investigation.

The GP will tell you to attend A& E. As will 111.
Go to A& E.
