Advice please :autistic child is not allowed to colour in lessons

Any advice please, my dd is autistic, highly intelligent but can't cope with exams and has started college.
She can't self regulate and talks a lot. One of her coping mechanisms is colouring in and I've been assured in the past by tas and teachers that she is OK with this and can still concentrate but, becomes distracted anyway and will need occasional reminding to keep on task.

She says her new teachers repeatedly ask her to stop colouring?

Is this expected now she is in college or should we expect them to accommodate this need? She finds sitting in one place hard and she fidgets.

Out of interest what is she going to do when she starts work?

I always used to doodle in meetings.

Later when l became a teacher l learnt that using 2 activities simulataneously helps you retain information better.

This is why remembering songs is so easy. You are doing aural and speech together.

Does this solve your judgey comment?

OP what exactly did you want people to say?

You've been given the advice repeatedly to contact the college and you have come up with repeated reasons why you can't/won't ... so why did you post if you have no intention of following any of the advice given?

If it isn't a specialist SEN college then the tutors may have a passing knowledge about SEN/EHCP plans etc but they may not have been given the full picture. They also expect students to advocate for themselves far more than they did at school - college is optional and therefore students want to be there as opposed to have to be there so the teachers are much less proactive about approaching students with issues, the onus is on the student to bring up any issues not the tutor.

My sister has students in her college classes who have EHCPs but 2 weeks into term she has had no more specific information as to what's in the plan, just that one exists ... she has been able to figure out a plan with a couple of the students who approached her directly but if students don't approach her then she has enough going on that she can't be going out of her way to chase students up who seem to be coping.

Your DD is at a new educational setting who may or may not have disseminated all her EHCP information to the relevant teachers, yet you seem very reluctant to confirm the information they hold and whether her specific teachers have been told about her EHCP, why? You've stated that you're concerned by repercussions but this is a new setting so how do you know how they will respond?

If they are aware of her EHCP and/or her need to doodle and are still chastising her then that is something that needs to be addressed asap as it is discrimination; if they aren't aware of her EHCP and/or her need to doodle then making them aware asap will ensure the chastisement stops and everyone gets the best learning experience.

Your DD needs to see you advocating for her so that she can start advocating for herself - if you won't send a quick email saying "Can you please ensure that Tutor X and Y are made aware of DDs EHCP and are informed of her need to doodle/colour in order to focus, as she has informed me that she has been told off for doing so in their classes. Thanks" then why would she feel she could speak to the teachers herself?

It came highly recommended for a reason. They will support her but you can't expect them to read minds. One of you needs to just explain to them that colouring helps her to focus on what is being said. You can't say that you know they will react badly from past experience as you have no experience of this college. You sent her there BECAUSE they are better.

If you're not willing to address it, what do.you expect to change?
