To be amazed at how much better I feel eating gluten free?

I've been suffering with bad stomach issues most of my life, which slowly got worse over the last couple of years. I had a negative blood test for coeliac, and previously thought that going gluten-free when you don't have coeliac disease was some kind of psuedoscientific health fad.

However, after doing a food diary I realised my symptoms correspond to days where I ate high levels of gluten. I reluctantly decided to cut gluten out for a week to see how I felt, after attempts at cutting dairy and high FODMAP fruits and veggies made no impact. Within a couple of days of glutting out gluten I was feeling so much better. I used to feel so tired and fatigued that I had started to have naps after work (despite only being in my 20s!), my brain would feel so foggy and confused in the evenings that I could barely push a shopping trolley around Tescos, and my entire life was dictated by my stomach issues as I'd be afraid of leaving the house in case I had a flare-up. It's been life-changing.

If you've had a whole life time of stomach issues, I'm surprised you've not tried this before! Glad you've managed to find something that works though. Stomach issues are a PITA

Have you ever tried going extremely low carb, bur not specifically gluten free?
You might get similar results.

I found I felt brilliant too! Just too tricky to continue it

Yes, it's fascinating feeling the difference. I went GF a decade ago and while I still get some IBS flare ups it's 90% better.
I miss marmite and doughnuts though.

Tesco 'marmite' is GF

And if you can get to Skegness Rock Shop they do GF doughnuts, churros and waffles. (Owner coeliac 🥰🥰🥰)

I find wheat literally causes depression symptoms for me 🤷‍♀️ been off it for almost 10 years now. it's fairly straightforward to avoid once you get the hang of it.

Really interesting. I find too much wheat makes me bloated and vvv tired. Limiting it to wholewheat and once or twice a week has made a big difference.

Yes this is what I was thinking. Some people cut out gluten and feel better but that is because they're not eating wheat rather than being gluten intolerant or Coeliac.

Ladyof2022 · 14/09/2023 00:10

Not eaten wheat for five years. It's easy once you get into the swing of it. I would never go back because of avoiding wheat has cleared up so many health issues.

Scienceadvisory · 14/09/2023 00:20

Have you considered a wheat intolerance rather than gluten? My intolerance is to wheat so I can still eat rye and barley - gives a few more options.

Also, think about what you have cut out of your diet. If you've essentially just removed cakes, biscuits etc then it may not be a gluten intolerance but issues with too many/highly processed carbs.

shakeitoffshakeacocktail · 14/09/2023 00:25

I had an awful huge sluggish stomach 4 weeks ago. I enjoy healthy food but had been 'treating' myself too much.

I've been eating sourdough rye from Aldi, omg its delicious, I actually forgot that white bread has no 'taste'

I've not gone gluten free yet but I've massively cut down my processed foods and avoided anything fried. It's working at the moment 🤞

30 years gf here. My sinusitis cleared up completely, too.

Welcome to our world.

Since July for me. I'm no longer bloated, no longer fatigued. I used to get awful heartburn frequently and now hardly anything at all and I'm not sure if it was just a coincidence but I've had 2 periods with only about a 5 day lateness between them rather than a couple of months (PCOS) I think dairy could be an issue with me as well cos that bloats me up although aside cheese, a splash of milk in my tea and a fuckton of chocolate I don't really have any other dairy products. I should switch back to rice milk in my tea and coffee.

Hi
To those saying its easy, could I have a few basic pointers please?
I'm vege so live on cards (as also don't like cooking fresh food) and struggle with IBS and feeling shattered.

Thanks.
