to think the UK has become awful?

I can't pinpoint when, but it feels like everything that was once pretty good is now quite awful

So expensive
No doctors
Uni costs for kids insane
Terrible rent / can't buy a house
Everyone seems quite unpleasant or racist

Is it just me?

If you are dim enough to use Gary Linekar as you moral guide then good luck to you! Russell Brand also likes to have followers.

I'm not saying they are the same, but seriously, think for yourself. I mean handing your brains over to someone else's opinions is just daft whatever your politics.

EasternStandard · 02/10/2023 23:25

I don’t get the telling posters they are dim part

He is out of touch though. I recall a lot of support on mn at the time

The Nhs literally saved my life in the past and the care from the consultants down to the orderlies was outstanding. I had to go to A&E today for something unrelated. We only realised after a while it was the first day of the 3 day drs strike but despite this, I was there 5 hours and had 3 tests in that time, a physical examination and two consultations with a healthcare professional. Such good care. Where else in the world can you turn up and be treated and receive care free when you need it. The Nhs does need a lot of money injecting into it and some major restructuring but it's still so valuable. I fully support all the strikes too. Those lifesavers deserve more.

@Teaandbiscuits60 it does not rain constantly in Wales! Have you forgotten the lovely June weather or the September heatwave? It's not 20mph everywhere but I agree it's a stupid policy. Console yourself with the glorious landscapes, friendly people, free prescriptions, low crime rates, cheaper housing, different culture etc. If you hate it here, move to England or Australia!

I couldn’t care less on that

Linekar oth in the cushy funded by state BBC job pontificating on housing a refugee in his huge, safe home is a nonsense. Maybe he should let the residents of Lampedusa know what they’re getting wrong.

I should have thought that that the Prime Minister was out of touch with reality of life in the UK is far more important to a discussion of why the UK has become awful, than what a TV presenter is doing?

Or are you saying the Prime Minister isn't responsible for the UK?

I’m up for people actually discussing the incoming change of high movement of people.

If that’s one party over another then get going.

If looking at Italy has shown anything once you are in the thick of it it’s unlikely others will help and it’s unlikely anyone will manage it.

Would you agree that making every possible effort to reduce climate change, and increasing overseas aid spending will go some way to reducing the impacts of our destruction of the planet?

They feel to me like a good place to start.

EasternStandard · 03/10/2023 07:43

We also need to look at strength in terms of energy security. Particularly if we are ahead already and can use that

Aid will not touch the sides. Especially when countries are led by autocratic leaders

Looks like they’ve rejected EU funding in last 24 hours

Energy security of course means investing in renewables which the UK could be leading the world in, but the government has decided instead to invest in the Norwegian government. With the double bonus of reducing our contribution to climate change.

A government with a long term view, would have a plan to ensure that the UKs electricity production was nuclear and carbon free by the earliest possible date, and then tackle the more challenging problem of how we remove are dependence on gas.

For example it would be simple enough to mandate the standards to which new homes have to be built, it is maddness that homes are still being built with gas boilers, and no solar panels either for heating or electricity.

I think not upgrading nuclear power stations was a mistake We need energy, and nuclear would have been a good way if producing home grown power until we get the infrastructure and battery storage technology to go full renewable. Now, we haven't got the power stations, or the investment or the expertise to do this. We have dreadful short termism in politics, and that is largely down to the FPTP electoral system.

EasternStandard · 03/10/2023 07:59

We are ahead on measures and renewables is happening.

I would also go with the new licence on top. We’ll need both

Nuclear sounds good, but you run into same issue with protesters and impact on immediate environment. People say no, similar to HS2 which would take millions of lorries off the road.

I’m also for the increase in water bill, not usually go for it increase cost but on this loads of new reservoirs and pipes sound good

That we’ve gone from Linekar being smug and annoying in a year with backing to the France and Germany saying no to Italy, Lampedusa residents denying ships with tents at docks, Tunisia saying no to aid shows how swift this change is.

It’s easier to have luxury beliefs when not under strain. What’s happening now shows they do not continue when that changes. It’s overwhelming and chaotic and other countries will say no.

Alexandra2001 · 03/10/2023 08:08

Tunisia has rejected because the EU promised 1bn but then offered 127m only... this is due to the 1bn being tied to the IMF bailout.

So its good to allow water companies to pay out 10s of billions to over seas shareholders/owners but then expect poorer households to make good the lack of investment to the tune of £1000s (over time) .... crazy economics.

I'd love it if posters could tell us how they would stop boats crossing the Med and the Channel... rather than just repeating we are facing a surge of migration.. we all know that.

...and no, we do not have very poor & large off shore Islands to send them all too, again Rwanda will take, up to 1000 migrants, wont touch the sides.

How does nuclear sound good?

It has huge imbedded carbon costs in the construction of the power station, and massive almost never ending costs in the decommissioning.

If nuclear is the answer, then the wrong question is being asked.

Nope you don't get to tell me who or what i quote tag or generally answer too, if you want that you'll have to become a mod.

Enjoy talking the blanks

Alexandra2001 · 03/10/2023 08:38

HS2 was never designed to take millions of lorries of the road or are these imaginary lorries carrying non existent plans to limit our freedoms?

Anyway, it'll be a very expensive white elephant, ending at Birmingham.

bombastix · 03/10/2023 08:59

Well it's clear sign of mismanagement and wasting money. Presumably in terms of public contracts it's worked too well. Everyone has got plenty fat on public money and wants more.
