To think that the Times turns off comments on some very strange topics?

I have the Times online app and like it a lot. However they turn off the comments for loads of articles. I can see the point when an article is about an ongoing court case or similar. Less so for the article today about whether or not rugby tops are now fashionable.

Ad revenue etc?
Some articles can be thinly disguised industry/supplier adverts

I think they often turn off comments below fashion articles because they get bombarded with men saying THIS PAPER HAS GONE TO THE DOGS and THIS ISN’T WHAT I PAY MY SUBSCRIPTION FOR. And then providing unsolicited feedback on the appearance of the writers.

It's not the one by Trinny Woodall peddling utter shite is it?

Because the world is full of working mothers with 29 step face regimes requiring distilled unicorn tears.

It's likely to be an automated system that turns off comments when they become "problematic" - ie x amount of comments have been deleted/blocked/contain certain keywords.

I don’t think so - it’s quite a “fluffy” article but it mentions lots of shops, not just one or two.

Ha ha, I didn’t bother reading that!

I think the Grauniad only leaves on comments for the most debate-worthy articles because the cost of employing moderators is so high.

I imagine the Times does the same thing.

That’s possible. It is a shame when that happens - it isn’t as though the article claimed to be about anything weighty. It’s easy to avoid articles that aren’t of interest.
