Is my DH the only person who does this?

I am going to be flamed but here goes…

Ive been married to DH for 10 years, together longer. Not a single problem in our marriage. We have a 5 year old girl and he absolutely dotes on her.

I am about to explode the next time I hear him talking in a weird high pitched (and loud) feminine voice to her. I can’t bear it any longer and it makes me cringe.

I’ve said in the past “talk to her in your normal voice” when she’s been a sod and I’ve suggested he needs to discipline but I don’t have the heart to tell him it knocks me sick 🤣

happy to be told I’m U but I am willing her to grow older so he can’t do this anymore!!!!!!!

Why can’t you tell him?

aspirationalflamingo · 12/09/2023 20:58

You mean the high pitched chirpy voice most adults use to talk to young children?

Drivingmenutsman · 12/09/2023 21:01

Yes Flamingo! I do it I suppose to some extent but I can’t bear it when he does it. When he talks to her in his normal voice I breathe an internal sign of relief. It’s an exquisite pleasure to hear it 🤣 I am aware that this is awful and I should count my blessings but it is what it is.

why can’t I tell him? Because it feels cruel.

I can understand that it grates on you, but I think you need to bite your tongue and let him develop his own relationship with her, really. Lots of people use a different voice when speaking to young children, it's annoying if you're not one of them but it's not harming her. It would be more harmful to her if your criticisms undermine his confidence in relating to her, so for that reason I think you need to learn to live with it.

Apparently dolphins also use baby talk!

I’d grit my teeth and ignore it

BabyofMine · 12/09/2023 21:11

See I think it’s weird my other half DOESN’T have a “talking to kids” voice. He might as well be talking to his manager or something when he’s talking to her, I think it’s odd. But they have a great relationship and I think she takes him a bit more seriously that me, and that might be part of it.

BabyofMine · 12/09/2023 21:12

Sorry I meant she takes him a bit more seriously!! (Edited it now - first time I’ve used the edit function!!)

Drivingmenutsman · 12/09/2023 21:30

Babyofmine she has him wrapped around her little finger and it’s def down to the voice. You’re absolutely right.
