to eat a Christmas pudding a year past BB Date?

I've found a stash of Christmas puddings long since forgotten. The least out of date one was Best Before June 23 but there's another couple that are Best Before dates in 2022. Can we eat them? I'm thinking it'll be fine? Like a well matured fruit cake? Or will we be sick?

I would :) I've normally got some left over and eat them through the year.

DustyLee123 · 12/09/2023 17:48

I’d cook them, then give them a sniff, see if they smell ok.

MonoLisa · 12/09/2023 17:49

It's a Best Before not Use by date. They will have just probably changed texture or flavour

JanesBlond · 12/09/2023 17:49

I would and have eaten Christmas puddings at least that far out of date, it’ll be fine.

Sniff test. We ate the top tier of our wedding cake at my DD’s christening which was 4 years later! All absolutely fine. Just re-iced it.

Montymorency · 12/09/2023 17:52

you'll be fine with 1 year out of date puds. our current jar of marmite is 5 years out of date and we haven't been ill yet

UglyNess · 12/09/2023 17:52

Awesome news. Just need some custard now. Or will the supermarkets have the brandy butter in already??

Bubbles254 · 12/09/2023 17:53

Yes, just make sure you put extra brandy on it (to kill off any bugs!)

UglyNess · 12/09/2023 17:57

Sensible.

@UglyNess YABU to eat a Christmas pudding at all because they are terrible, even when in date.

Sorry...

The expensive ones in nice food shops are laid away to mature. You are paying extra for the time it's stored.

I buy luxury Christmas puddings and purposely leave them an extra few years to mature.

They are like a rich Christmas cake. You can eat a good Christmas cake if it's stored properly for years. They just get more delicious.

UglyNess · 13/09/2023 12:07

So I've inadvertently turned them posh? Great news

Christmas puddings get better with age.
YAVU not to leave it longer (but I know you can't....).
