Tipping

Opinions please. I’ve just had my nails done. It cost £30 and I gave the girl that did them a £2 tip. Was I being mean? My friend thinks I should have given her at least 10%.
If I have a takeaway delivery - I usually by by card over the phone and tip the driver £1 - £2.

im questioning myself now. Is that enough? AIBU?

I a.ways do 10%

LuckyAmy1986 · 12/09/2023 17:28

I never tip unless in a restaurant with excellent service

MonoLisa · 12/09/2023 17:44

I don't top people who set or have a say in their pricing. I am aasuming they set it not to rely on tips. Generally in restaurant it's for very good service , not automatic thing as well.

I don't always tip, but if I do then I'd aim for around 10%. TBH I am glad that we don't have tipping to the extent that it exists in America, I'd rather just see price which covers what it needs to to start with!

DeltaAlphaDelta79 · 12/09/2023 18:21

I dont tip anyone ever. I dont agree with it, and think that it encourages people to a reasonable/good job only in the expectation of a tip. I wouldnt trust a restaurant to let their staff keep the tips even if cash was left, and I would much rather pay an increased cost to ensure people got paid a decent wage.

I know that it won't be a popular opinion, and I have my hard hat well fitted!

Precipice · 12/09/2023 18:26

You gave her more money than she was asking, i.e. you deliberately overpaid, and you're asking whether that was too low and insufficient?

It wouldn't have been "mean" to pay the 30 pounds that the service was priced at. It's not mean to pay the price charged. There's no reason why some customer service jobs should be paid extra by the customers.

trader21c · 12/09/2023 18:27

I don’t tip either they have got my custom

takealettermsjones · 12/09/2023 18:29

I don't tip for nails or takeaway deliveries. The staff are paid!

Legale · 12/09/2023 18:29

I don't tip. My own nail tech says she never tips when she has treatments done herself. Her reasoning was she prices her services to mean she makes a profit over cost of materials/time, so she doesn't expect more on top of that, and others should be doing the same. Also that she understands clients may have budgeted for the cost of their nails and no more, meaning a tip might leave them short for something else that month.

Foodieasfuck · 12/09/2023 18:34

Thanks all - I feel a bit better now.

I don’t generally tip but I do leave £1 or £2 when I get my nails done (exactly the same amount even if I get a mani-pedi). We’re not in America. If I don’t have it I don’t feel bad for not giving it, it’s a token - no way would I give 10%. I’m in London, if that makes any difference.

Nopenopenopenopenopenope · 12/09/2023 18:37

I usually go for 10% but I didn't always have money on me. I tip my massage therapist once a fortnight so I don't have to fuck about getting change. I think you're fine.

andrainwillmaketheflowersgrow · 12/09/2023 18:37

I wouldn't have tipped anything.

Nopenopenopenopenopenope · 12/09/2023 18:39

Oh and I only really tip them because they work for a spa, which means they don't get paid enough of the amount I'm already paying IMHO.

Starlightstarbright2 · 12/09/2023 18:40

I don’t tip … like pp .. staff are on NMW so not like America part of wages

FeigningConcern · 12/09/2023 19:20

Why are you tipping people who have just done their job?

FloweryName · 12/09/2023 19:23

You were very generous. I expect many customers don’t tip at all, which is fair enough.

Badleg89 · 12/09/2023 19:23

I don't tip. Only place I do is my hairdressers because she's cash only and costs £28 so I just give £30. Everyone is paid minimum wage so generally I don't tip

Nevermind202020 · 12/09/2023 19:29

For some reason I can't edit - I just wanted to clarify regarding my comment about 10% being more about eating out situations, and not actually nails or treatments. If I could delete it I would, because now I realise it's not that relevant to have written that! Oh well. @Foodieasfuck I definitely don't think you should feel bad at all!

dothehokeycokey · 12/09/2023 20:44

I work in a tipping industry and it's never expected but always welcome and appreciated.

I always tip in independent businesses because I know how hard it is at the minute for them to stay afloat (im
One myself and it's bloody hard )

Although we have a nmw system as pointed out by someone up thread a lot of people are having their hours cut which is obviously having a knock on effect.

4 pints of milk a loaf of bread and a tube of toothpaste was £ 8 yesterday so the odd tip here and there will definitely be helping

Foodieasfuck · 13/09/2023 12:18

Thanks everyone 😊

I don't tip.

Their price has been worked out for them to make a profit, and they've set their own price. I'll pay that price. I won't pay any more than that price.
