To be fed up of some smokers' inconsiderate behaviour

Why do some insist on smoking right outside the doorway of supermarkets, restaurants etc. so that you have no way of avoiding walking through the disgusting second hand smoke when walking past them? Our local supermarket has a designated smoking area away from the doorway but it appears only the staff use it. Are people so desperate for a cigarette that they cannot walk a few metres to keep entrance and exit ways clear?

Weird takes...at the end of the day as a smoker it's my decision to do that but it's also non smokers decision not to. Considering the latter is the norm, naturally and smoking hinders that, it is I that has the responsibility to be considerate of others not the other way around.

CollagenQueen · 12/09/2023 12:03

I'm not a smoker, but for goodness sake, there's an awful lot of over reaction about cigarette smoke.

I get it if you're asthmatic, but if it's just the smell of smoke for two seconds, I really do think people need to get a grip.

Everyone used to smoke inside not that long ago : restaurants, planes, banks, shops, bars.....then they moved the smokers outside....and even that isn't enough for some people.

Far worse happens at sea, Op.

teenysaladandsniffofarose · 12/09/2023 12:04

I 100% agree and I say that as someone who loves a "social" cigarette 😂

I hate when people do it in a place surrounded by children too like a kids park or the fair etc.

And I will absolutely judge someone who's pushing a pram with a cigarette in hand. Grim🤢

Secondhand smoke is very dangerous to babies (born and unborn) and children, and the WHO reports that there is no safe level of exposure. The CDC reports that effects on the body can be immediate. Babies exposed to secondhand smoke in the womb are more at risk of SIDS once born.

In that context, it's completely understandable that a pregnant woman might not wish to walk through smoke, even for a few seconds, isn't it?

(That's in addition to the fact that it stinks, so imo nobody should be forced to walk through it, pregnant or not!)

YANBU OP!

Aposterhasnoname · 12/09/2023 12:15

We were once sat outside a pub eating our lunch when a pair of smokers turned up, sat at our table without asking, and lit up while we were eating. When we asked them not to we were told to fuck off.

Nevermind202020 · 12/09/2023 12:48

Screwballs · 12/09/2023 11:33

how absolutely horrendous, you mean to tell me that the world doesnt stop for pregnant woman? Who'd have thought. I do hope you whinge about people driving near you too, with all those exhaust fumes.

I don't think @ActDottie is expecting the world to stop for her though.
Also the old argument about exhaust fumes is often brought out as an excuse to be an inconsiderate smoker, and it doesn't actually hold much weight.

Wantcleanair · 12/09/2023 13:37

@CollagenQueen

but if it's just the smell of smoke for two seconds, I really do think people need to get a grip.

But it isn't just the smell though is it, as awful as that is? It is the fact that you have to breathe in the smoke either from the burning cigarette or what the smoker has exhaled as you try to get past. You may be happy enough to do that but I would really prefer not to and I don't think expecting smokers to smoke where they are away from other people i.e. in the smoking shelters is unreasonable or an over reaction.

My local big teaching hospital with one of the largest and best respiratory centres in the UK has put their smoking area right outside the main entrance, it’s ridiculous!

Yeugh that's just beyond disgusting 🤢 Some smokers are downright inconsiderate!

Just looked up our hospital, to see if I could post a pic of the smoking area right outside the main entrance doors, to find that in every picture it has been filtered out 🙄

ShatParp · 12/09/2023 13:52

I think some of these comments are from people who haven't actually read the original post... surely there's nobody who thinks standing in a DOORWAY smoking is ok when there's plenty of space to stand slightly further away from the doorway?!
Can't stand twatty doorway smokers but thankfully I've noticed people being really considerate around my kids, which is really kind!

Wantcleanair · 12/09/2023 14:08

Apparently there are several people who think doorway smoking is absolutely fine judging by the voting scores. Unbelievable isn't it? I can only assume they are the inconsiderate smokers I am complaining about.

Another who can't agree with you in a world full of polluting vehicles, even as a life-long non-smoker.

We used to sit in cinemas full of smoke, go on planes full of smoke, drive for hours in cars full of smoke. Briefly walking past a smoker is so inconsequential you need to curtail your love of controlling others when in reality their actions are not affecting you.

I personally didn't! I am not sure how this comment justifies the inconsiderate behaviour of smokers 🤷 Many things that happened in the past have changed and it doesn't mean we should be eternally grateful for everything simply because things used to be far worse.

😂Not sure how I'm "controlling" others by simply stating that I'm fed up of them. You would maybe do well to follow your own advice here! 😂😂

I am a smoker and it drives me mad the way quite a lot of smokers behave.
If I am out, I make sure I move far away from other people. I also keep a container, in the car, to put my cigarette ends in. I get so angry at people dropping theirs on the ground.
Everybody knows how antisocial smoking is. It costs nothing to be considerate of others.

Wantcleanair · 12/09/2023 14:49

@BrownJenkins

You are so right. Thankfully, most comments on this thread are from sensible people like you.

Because you passed a law requiring them to go outside. You got exactly what you asked for and it's too late to cry now.

Smokers are not causing you a real problem (a fleeting moment of smoke as opposed to many hours of captivity) but you want to cause them a problem - you want them moved on, you want to be able to voice your disapproval of them. Disgusting is a strong word and one favoured by the intolerant.

You are exaggerating the problem to allow you to ride around town on your high horse - but at least a horse isn't a polluting vehicle so some progress is being made.

CatamaranViper · 12/09/2023 14:53

It's when you see them standing at the doors into a hospital that gets me. I always ask smokers to move away from the doors. 9/10 they do.
While it is inconsiderate, I think it's more ignorance than malice

Viralsunflower · 12/09/2023 14:53

YANBU.

The other day I was going to the womens health bit of our hospital, which is where you go if you are pregnant, going for tests, having scans, in labour, etc. There was a family stood RIGHT outside the door smoking, next to the no smoking sign. I pointed it out but they didn't move.

It could be said that you are actually minimising the issue in order to justify the behaviour.

Viralsunflower · 12/09/2023 15:02

Disgusting is a strong word and one favoured by the intolerant.

It is disgusting. It stinks, it gives people cancer and serious respiratory illnesses, including via secondhand smoke. Why should anyone have to tolerate being exposed to smoke when they don't CHOOSE to smoke? If people want to smoke, fine, don't inflict it on others.

Runnersandtoms · 12/09/2023 15:04

Totally agree about walking through other people's disgusting smoke, and especially about people not considering dropping fag ends on the floor littering. For some reason it's seen as acceptable to drop fag ends in a way that is different to how people see dropping other litter. It's actually much worse due to the effects of the toxins on the water table, wildlife etc as well as looking unpleasant.

MariaLuna · 12/09/2023 15:05

Cars are more dangerous in my humble opinion.

Wantcleanair · 12/09/2023 15:07

Says she who is doing just that! Some hypocrisy at play there.
Judging by the amount of horse poo on the roads and pavements where I live, then I reckon they do cause some pollution 🤷

I get you disagree. That's fine. Just a pity you have to be so rude about it!
