Started a new role last week, I have been studying and reading all week as I need to be clued up before I actually start doing my job. We have a meeting tomorrow the whole team will be there.
some are staying and some are going home. I don’t actually have any work to do and everyone around me will be working.

Would you stay after the meeting and keep studying or just go back home?

I feel bad because I have only met everyone over teams but then it’s feels pointless to sit there all day.

I'd ask my line manager what they think I should do.

CircleofWillis · 12/09/2023 05:58

If everyone around you will be working will there be any time to socialize?

LordEmsworth · 12/09/2023 06:03

I would absolutely stay, if the stuff I need to do can be done there. Getting to know people in person is priceless, much better way to build relationships. Assuming it's a "typical" office job, there will still be chatter.

It is not pointless if you get to socialkse and get to know your team better.

Zanatdy · 12/09/2023 06:05

I’d stay as it will be nice to meet your team face to face

maddening · 12/09/2023 06:06

Ps.if some.will be doing the role that you do then ask for.some.side by sides which would be useful

MintTeaIsMyFav · 12/09/2023 06:08

Everyone is working but they have meetings on teams so will be in and out all day.

I assumed you meant they would be going out after work. Staying to study while they work is not socialising. I would go home after all they may be put in a position where they feel they have to look after you and talk to you when they would rather just get on with their work uninterrupted.

ManateeFair · 12/09/2023 10:14

Personally, I think if you can do your reading/studying in the office while your colleagues are working, it would be good to stay after the meeting - it can be really useful in a new job just hearing the conversations people are having on the phone/Teams and so on, to get a sense of what people are working on and what their jobs are etc.

MagpiePi · 12/09/2023 10:17

If you decide to stay then you need to let your line manager know in advance as they will have to find you a desk, give you a H&S induction etc etc.

DoubleTequilaSunrise · 12/09/2023 10:22

It's a new role, you don't know people yet, I would absolutely stay.

I don’t actually have any work to do
if you are "training" for your role, and paid for that, that IS work, literally part of the job. If you genuinely have nothing to do, ask your line manager!

H&S induction for being in the office? Seriously?
That sounds a bit extreme. You don't need one for the meeting 😂
