How many hours do you work? Do you have much energy in evenings and weekends?

Wondering how much energy people have in the evenings after work?

How long do you, for example, spend cooking dinner? Do you have enough energy to go to the gym or go to the cinema after work?

Or to focus on watching some telly before bed? Or so tired you just zone out until you can fall asleep?

How many hours do you do, and does your employer expect you to be available and work in your evenings or at the weekend?

I feel my energy levels are so, so low and wondering what is in any way normal.

I'm early 30s, work 32 hours a week, high stress job and I'm permanently knackered. I go to work, I come home and when I'm not working I'm with my child. I'm awaiting further investigations into CFS/ME, so that potentially could play a massive part.

Work in school 8-9 hours per day then need to do a couple of hours at home most evenings. Two teens/pre-teens who have activities most days to be taken to, often finishing quite late. DH helps but has a long commute so often home quite late. I cook every day, usually seems to take about an hour whatever I make! DH does most of the housework. Weekends more activities and usually do about 3 hours work and always some jobs to do around the house. Both my DC also suffer from anxiety so struggle to get to sleep and often want to talk late at night when I just need to get off and get stuff done!

I must admit I'm always so tired! I'm not the best at time management either so often end up doing things until late at night. I do make myself go to one yoga class a week but that's all. For me, it was better when the DC were younger, partly because they had fewer things going on and they went to bed earlier but mostly because I only worked 3 days a week. I am perimenopausal too which doesn't help with energy levels.

I generally work ten hour days-I’m in at 7.30 and leave at about 5.30. Once I’ve got home, cooked dinner and cleared up, I’m shattered. I don’t really go out on a ‘school’ night or I’d really struggle to be up at 6.

@Dymaxion I combined with squats, weights, burpees, walking. Got the exercises off Instagram betterme? just what popped up on reels really, they’re all much the same (I think). It’s really just the willpower to actually do the exercise, move and repeat the movements regularly.🙂

Dymaxion · 11/09/2023 22:27

@Missingmyusername thank you, not on instagram, I think it would finish me off mentally ! but will have a quick search and see what comes up Smile

I’m out of the house 6.30am-5pm each day and then usually do another hour or two in the evening so working day is about 12 hours including commute, and I try to get to the gym and cook from scratch too. If my secondary age child needs homework help that pushes me over the edge. Full on, man!

37 hours a week, but 2 hours or so over that currently and I am permanently exhausted. My hours are slightly diff than they used to be - shifted forward by an hour - and I thought it would help me do something in the evenings but it hasn’t.

I don’t know if it’s a hormone thing, a vitamin deficiency, a low-level depression but all I can think about when I get in is doing dinner, showering, zoning out in front of the tv or surfing the web and doing it all again the next day. It’s not a life, just an existence. I feel I should be doing something - I know people who go for long walks or outdoor swims or for meals, to the cinema or an exercise class and it just feels beyond me.

I’m a lecturer, and teach three days a week on campus, then have one day a week WFH. My contracted hours are 28, and I am trying to do better at not working outside them. I have a freelance social media management gig that roughly translates to four hours a month, but I do it as and when.

On teaching days I am knackered. Generally don’t do much during the week in the evenings. DP and I share cooking pretty equally but I do the lion’s share of laundry/housework.

Johnisafckface · 12/09/2023 00:20

I work about 8-9 hrs a day Mon thru Fri. I usually start at 8/9 and end at 5/6. On my late starts I usually ride my exercise bike for an hour and 15 mins which is about three times a week. On my early days I usually that long ride after work.

I work from home so I usually throw a couple of meals together during lunch or Sunday afternoons. By the time I get done with my exercise I’m done and am usually in the bed and asleep by 9:30.

I wish I had energy to do more like I used to but I’m early 50s and realize that my energy levels are totally different to when I was in my 30s to mid 40s, it’s gone downhill since then.

Ludoole · 12/09/2023 00:29

I do 4, 10 hour shifts finishing at midnight. I have zero energy after work, though peri menopause not helping with that either. It's hard motivating myself to do anything at home other than the basics... and then I get low because my house doesn't look like I want it to... hopefully it's shortlived...

anotherdaytoday76 · 12/09/2023 00:34

46-48 hours actually working a week. Exhausted for much else other than the minimum the kids need me for.

ShadyPaws · 12/09/2023 00:40

40hrs. Chronic illnesses. Absolutely fuck all energy
On a good night I can cook and exercise (usually do spin classes at home or weights)
On a bad night I sleep for 2hrs after work

Also found my folate, ferritin and vitamin D are low so I'm working on upping those

Dee03 · 12/09/2023 00:52

I work for the nhs...3/4 12 1/2 hr shifts a week, nights and days...I'm 50 and in perimenopause and I'm totally knackered....zero motivation when I'm not working, for anything except sleep 😴 and even that can be disturbed 😧

Lelliekellie · 12/09/2023 08:33

I work 17.5hrs a week. But I’m a full time SAHM to two 2.5yr olds. So I have the kids all day everyday and I work when they go to bed (20:00 - 00:00) 6 days a week. I have one night off a week.

my employer is great and my work is all admin based so that means I can work those hours.

im definitely burning the candle at both ends but I find the energy when I have too. I dunno where from though haha x

RedPony1 · 12/09/2023 12:28

I work 42.5 hours a week (8am to 5pm) Unless it's an emergency i don't work later.
But, i get up 5:30 and get home 8:30pm as i do the horses before and after work. Once i get home i have to cook etc.

At weekends i'm normally out all day each day.

I only need 5/6 hours sleep a night though, i've been conditioned that way from a child so unless i've done something out of the ordinary (like on Sunday we did a 6 hour hike) my energy levels are always pretty high.
