To let 11 year old walk to shops

I let my 11 year old go to the local shop to buy milk, kitchen roll etc.
Our neighbour bumped into him there and then told me she’s surprised I allow him to do that!

Of course that’s fine? Once in secondary school, they can do what they like within reason

My year 7 has come home reporting that most of her new Friends have lunchboxes packed by mum. I do think we sometimes baby kids too much and they don't get the rewards of independence ass result

What are they having though? I pack dc7's lunchbox every day. He likes hot food so I heat this thermos, microwave lunch and pop it in the thermos, make wee hearts out of strawberries, stick in an apple, yoghurt, cutlery and napkin (sometimes with a note). All while he gets dressed. He makes his own breakfast. That is enough in the morning.

My younger DD has been doing that from 8 with her sister (then aged 9) then alone from 9.

The worst thats happened is dropping 50p and not being able to find it, and the time the milk fridge was broken, so they moved the milk into the wine fridge and she couldn't reach... so an adult got it down for her.

Yabu if he's going in the car.

Unless I've misunderstood, your DC is 7 years old whereas the DC in the post you're replying to is in year 7 (so aged 11 or 12). Bit of a difference!

Are you serious

I let my 9yo and 6yo go together. Wouldn't let the 6yo go on his own but prefer the 9yo to take him so that if there's an issue one of them can run back to me. That said it's not even a ten minute walk - more like 5. And there's a button controlled crossing for the only road. I think I'd probably have waited another year if it had been much further, but at 11 there should be no problem.

Sounds fine to me, I was doing similar at that sort of age, in year 6. Possibly even year 5 but can't quite remember. Once I was in secondary school I was getting to the bus to town on the weekends sometimes and hanging about in shops/parks etc there with my friends for hours.

Don't really see what's wrong with doing a y7's packed lunch for them, especially if you've got to do them for younger siblings anyway.

Not really when it comes to the time taken to get out of the house though.

I've just started letting my 9 year old walk to school and to shops alone. Neither far (about 7 mins) so I think 11 is totally fine!
