Childminder with conjunctivitis would you send your DC?

As title really, cm has conjunctivitis but says is being treated

would you send dc? Mnitsure if we are over worried about germs and passing them on mil is currently in hospital ICU, so wouldn’t want to bring it into the ward if she took a turn and we had to visit and I am having Community nurses every other day don’t want to pass it on.
is it very contagious? Am I being bonkers?

It is very contagious, but I’d hope an adult with it would manage that better than another child.

When did it start being treated? If treatment started yesterday and your child is due to attend tomorrow then I’d think it’d be ok, but if treatment only started today I don’t think I would.

No I wouldn’t becAuse I had it earlier in the year and spread it to my youngest- horrible

Bibbitybobbitty · 10/09/2023 21:35

Its infectious amongst very young children because they are lilely to cuddle each other, touch/put in moudhs the same toys etc & cant be expecred to wash hands properly to avoid spreadinc it. Childminder is an adult who is able to do all of this & thus mitigate the spread.
Conjunctivitis isn't excludable on NHS list of infectious diseases for childcare therefore expect to still pay if uou keep your child off.

I thought its fine after being treated for 24 hours with antibiotics

LizzieBet14 · 10/09/2023 21:45

Children are allowed in school with conjunctivitis as long as they are taking antibiotics, so I presume the same rule applies for childminders too.

Provided she’s using separate towels to your child when they’re washing their hands and they aren’t touching each other’s faces, it’s probably fine.

Kids pass it on to each other because little kids are hopeless with hygiene and personal space, and parents and kids pass it to each other because they’ve probably shared towels or hugged and kissed the kids or the kids have got into bed with them and had their head on the same pillow or whatever, before the parents realised one of them had conjunctivitis.

I wouldn’t worry. This is an adult childminder who will be washing her hands, not sharing towels, not rubbing her eyes and then touching a child- she will be practicing all the hygiene that little children do not.

The antibiotic eye drops work really fast so it’s unlikely to be contagious if she’s been treating it all weekend.

You should be having your DC shower/bathe and change into clean clothes before visiting the hospital as well so I think it will be ok.
