No appetite, just want chocolate/refined sugar

Pandasandflowers · 10/09/2023 19:37

Currently have very little appetite for a proper evening meal but have no problem hacking away at chocolate/cake/ice cream. DH has no sweet tooth at all, so if I'm buying, it's all for me which makes me feel worse. Trying to tell myself it's OK but long term it can't go on. I always always ALWAYS feel the need for something sweet after my dinner

This weather has been nice though, instead of chocolate I've been having a large glass of fruit juice which is still bad right, but better than chocolate?

So how about you mums? What are you like with sugar? (I'm not a mum yet, 30(f) looking to start a family, but I feel like when I am, I will need about three treats a day 😂)

Treats don't have to be sugar

Slippery slope there

Chestnutz · 10/09/2023 19:42

What about shifting to dark chocolate or 100% cocoa ones? Might satisfy the hit with less of the sugar.

Ffsjustltb · 10/09/2023 19:45

I've just eaten two bars of Cadbury caramel for my tea. And crisps! Not saying it's a good thing mind.

Often don't want the tea I cook for everyone else. I sometimes compromise the sweets for cereal on the basis that at least added vitamins and milk.

Not much. Actual fruit would be better - at least you'd get some fibre.

Insommmmnia · 10/09/2023 19:56

Are you anaemic?

I always thought anaemia would make me crave foods with iron but instead I've realised over the years that when I lose my appetite and just want to eat crap it means I'm anaemic

Pandasandflowers · 10/09/2023 19:59

@MatthewsMumFromTikTok I agree 😩😂

@Chestnutz Dark chocolate is awful IMO but I definitely have to do something, I may work on limiting the amount I have otherwise this won't end well for my waistline 😂

Pandasandflowers · 10/09/2023 20:01

@Ffsjustltb My kinda tea 100% lol. Yep we really shouldn't encourage each other. Want to start a family soon so that may be my motivation to look into better ways to eat. Coffee is a huge problem for me too, but I've had a few people tell me once I'm pregnant, I'll just avoid dangerous things like the plague

Judellie · 10/09/2023 20:03

Nature's Finest do pineapple chunks in juice. Or mango or pear, not sure if any others. There just in plastic tubs, so you just need to literally take the lid off and find yourself a spoon. That's what I've been trying instead of chocolate, would that work? Good luck!

Pandasandflowers · 10/09/2023 20:05

Yes! I've had anaemia for the longest time and every time I go for my bloods I'm told to eat more greens which I'm terrible at. I have started to look into recipes incorporating veg as I want to take my health very seriously now. If not now, I won't ever

OP posts:
Pandasandflowers · 10/09/2023 20:06

@Judellie It'll probably work until the colder months because I'm such a greedy guts lol. Also was given a velvetiser by DH, which I love him for but I'm slightly mad at him for

If I eat refined sugar, I want refined sugar. I have just gone cold turkey and stopped eating it. I'm not a fruit eater, so I have managed to get rid of my sweet tooth completely. When I'm tired the cravings kick in, so getting enough sleep is key for me. The first couple of days of not eating it were the hardest and then I find I just don't want it.

Insommmmnia · 10/09/2023 20:09

Try Floradix off amazon or from boots @Pandasandflowers

Honestly for me unless I get my anaemia sorted I continously struggle to eat well. which is not to say I'm prefect when it's sorted 😂

It depends how much sweets you actually eat op, there’s people who say they always eat junk but actually eat just a bar of chocolate or something. You should be having bare minimum a breakfast lunch and dinner. When you get cravings choose the lesser evil- the lighter crisps, chocolate etc. I will say I got out of eating crisps every night through yoghurts and frozen grapes. If you’re thinking about having a child gestational diabetes has ballooned in the last five years so you need to be aware of it. Best of luck op

Createausername1970 · 10/09/2023 20:12

My "healthy" snack food is Greek yoghurt. I have it with fruits, nuts and seeds for breakfast. And will have spoonfuls during day if I am hungry and I could happily have it for dinner too.

My big downfall is the honey I squeeze over it.😋

Pandasandflowers · 10/09/2023 20:15

Thank you ladies for the replies. I've always understood why people get frustrated when one asks how to stop eating sugar, it's simple, you either stop or don't, no one can make you.

Just wanted to get advice from mums/people looking to conceive what they think of how much chocolate they eat or if they pay attention to that. I don't want my baby (when I do fall pregnant) to be harmed by caffeine content either but I think it's quite small in chocolate. I know I won't be touching coffee as soon as I find out I'm pregnant.

@Createausername1970 Thanks for reminding me, I will be buying myself some greek yogurt. With drizzles of honey of course to make it palatable ;)

I can relate.. are you dehydrated?

Pandasandflowers · 10/09/2023 20:17

@Likeaburstcouch I drink 2L of water a day :) it actually helps my skin so I don't know why I go and spoil it with the chocolate 😂

I came on to say this. Cut it out totally.
Easy to say I know.

I've done this partially but not fully but now find if I have some too much sugary stuff the next day I'm craving more. And so on. I'd like to cut it totally but it's my one vice (don't drink or smoke or do much fun)

It's hard and id do it gradually. I started not eat at all after 8pm. That cut out evening snacks.

Then after lunch I want sugar but I make myself wait at least an hour at least then have a smaller amount as I'm not eating it reactively. Also what I've had for lunch has a huge bearing on how the afternoon cravings go also.

Lots of discipline is needed but it's doable.

Anecdotally, I ate tonnes of choc when I had my second son. He was enormous when born - 11lb
It wasn't gestational diabetes (some miracle) but it certainly didn't help!

AllOfThemWitches · 10/09/2023 20:51

I have a hell of a sweet tooth when I'm about to get my period. I tend to avoid 'treats' generally though because I don't want to go OTT and get fat.

Chestnutz · 10/09/2023 20:55

Yes - the very dark chocolate can take a bit of getting used to. An alternative snack if you need something sweeter is to slice an apple and spread some nut butter on top. I get into bad habits of eating sweet stuff in the evening - then have to go cold turkey and just cut it straight out for a few weeks which resets me until the bad habits kick in again. I'm anemic too with an enlarged spleen so never have big appetite, so I think the sweet craving is my bodies way of saying it wants more fuel - but I need to make better choices about what to fuel it with! I'm about to start again tomorrow to cut refined sugar out.

Pandasandflowers · 10/09/2023 21:23

@AllOfThemWitches Reading your post has definitely reminded me that I need to be disciplined again. To not put on weight used to be my concern but I see so many slim people eat chocolate, I dismiss that I shouldn't have it! Need to bear in mind that everyone's weight/activity is not relevant and just do the sensible safe thing and abstain. Would like a flat tummy again but thinking of not bothering if I'm going to preggers soon haha x
