To think our neighbours are being unreasonable?

We live rurally. Our garden backs onto their paddock. Our house is central on an 8 acre plot. The kids have gotten the house out while I make dinner and are squirting each other. There have been squeals but it's not as if they are shrieking. Neighbours have just been round to complain about the noise....surely they can put up with distant noise from two kids for an hour...

The only answer is to get a trampoline and put it at the boundary.

Nopenopenopenopenopenope · 10/09/2023 23:04

Cut your grass at the same time as them? Wtf? They can fuck right off!

Bellyblueboy · 10/09/2023 23:04

The children on my street had a screaming competition outside my house this afternoon. It had been a regular feature of this summer😂. Kids are loud and your neighbour is an arse.

PyongyangKipperbang · 10/09/2023 23:05

"MY WAY OR THE WRONG WAY!!"

For a start, you should be cutting your grass at 2pm or e4pm or ....any other time that he hasnt dictated! They need someone to blame for anything that isnt perfect and that is now you. I rather suspect that they have always been like this, I wonder if the former owner got her lawned mowed at the wrong time.......

I had neighbours like this, they blamed literally everything on my kids. She complained that should couldnt park in "her" space (on street parking) because of "your kids friends parking there", eldest was 14 at the time ffs. She stormed round one day yelling that my kids had thrown shit on her conservatory roof. Not literal shit....moss and crap like that. I asked when it was done and she said "It was in the last two days as it was fine when we went to (wherever) and now its all there. I am sick of having fucking kids living next door".

I thanked her for telling me and said I would congratulate the kids. She went CRAZY. I mean properly librarian poo. So I was proud of them?! I bet I encouraged them to vandalise her property!!!! REally mad. She would report me and get an ASBO and get the police involved and get me evicted etc etc.

I said that A) I own this house, she can't get me evicted (she had me down as some single mother benefit scrounger, her words) and B) yes I would say "well done" to the kids because since 4 days before they had been in North Wales with their dad on holiday so if they managed to hit her roof from nearly 200 miles away, it was a hell of an achievement and C) she might want to get her gutters cleaned so the squirrels wouldnt keep kicking shit out of them.

Her house went on the market less than a month later and it turned out that my other NDN is her neice and couldnt stand her either!

@BirdBox12 We were away for 6 weeks over summer and truly they were out from 5-6 while I made dinner...my garden backs up to their paddock so they are a good distance away. Their plot must be 5-8 acres I would think. My kids really weren't screaming. If they were it would have driven me batty. They stormed over here last night thinking we were having a bonfire. We weren't and never have had one! It was coming across the fields from the farm! We've only lived here a year and before that it was a an old lady. I think they've gotten used to no noise at all. He was so aggressive he really scared my 5 year old. She's in her garden playing with a hose. She didn't expect a man to shout at her. I've really tried to be nice to them but they are just so unreasonable. They cut their grass at 10am on a Saturday and want us to cut at the same time. So far we have but I'm losing patience rapidly!

Stop pandering to them. Grow a backbone. Push back. Don't do anything they tell you unless you wanted to do it anyway. Politely but firmly refuse. And when they come onto your land throwing around unfounded accusations like the BBQ, very firmly make it clear that you will not tolerate their behaviour.

People like this will keep pushing you around as long as you let them.
And mow your lawn at a time that suits you.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 10/09/2023 23:16

I can't bear kids shrieking and screaming, but even I think adjacent houses on 8 acre plots with a sodding field in between them are far enough apart to be able to make a bit of playing noise.

As for intimidating someone else's 5 year old for playing in their own garden - they'd be left under no illusion that I tolerate bullies. At all. They'd be told to stop harassing me about lawn cutting and other people's bonfires and to mind their own sodding business.

Maddy70 · 10/09/2023 23:35

Kids screams ate ear pirving. They're trying to enjoy their garden too

Just tell them not to shout

susan123graeme · 10/09/2023 23:36

Ignore your neighbours - don't open the door - it's your space and your family - enjoy the lovely weather

Who do they think they are?? The sound so self righteous.

If my neighbours acted like that I'd have been as loud as possible (with reasonable limits). In fact, I'd have been tempted to get my lawn mower out....while the kids continued to have a fun, noisy time

CherryMaDeara · 10/09/2023 23:50

Well that needs to stop. Mow your lawn at 8pm.

towriteyoumustlive · 11/09/2023 09:50

So basically you're living next to a psychopath!

I'd just smile, apologise, tell them you'll see what you can do, then do absolutely nothing and just carry one living your normal lives.

And do not even consider mowing the lawn at 10am on a Sunday. Lawns are too damp to be mowed at 10am! 8pm is much better!

Syndulla · 11/09/2023 09:53

They sound awful OP.

If they come around again and shout, you would be perfectly reasonable to call the police.

And cut your grass whenever you like.

Sounds like they want absolute silence. Totally unreasonable.

Sebock · 11/09/2023 11:17

He didn't even come to my front door. He came over the fence and appeared with his head in my kitchen. They definitely seem to think we don't "know how things are done" because we moved out of London and haven't lived in this village for 1000 years. I've really tried but I'm just done with it now. In London I always kept my kids as quiet as possible in the garden because it was tiny. It's one of the reasons we left! I do have some sympathy for the mowing as it's a 3 hours job on a noisy ride on mower. But we have crops behind our paddock and theirs which has massively more noisy tractors trundling up and down.

Your neighbour is being an arse. At most he would be able to hear a whisper. I live across the road from a school, and can barely hear all 400 children playing!

Does he complain about any nearby agricultural noise too? Farm equipment can be loud and fertiliser smells can carry a long distance....
