To quit my job

I have been in a customer facing role for almost a year. I enjoy it and thought I had been doing a good job. Recent feedback from my manager hasn't been great though - not about the work I do, but about needing to be more outgoing. I get the feeling that they feel I am not the right kind of person for this role. I am relatively quiet (but always smiley and friendly) and clearly they want someone with a more outgoing personality.

Not sure what to do as in many ways this is my dream job but not sure I can stay knowing the manager doesn't think I am right for the job. AIBU to think I should just leave and find a job where I fit in more? Or should I just stick it out anyway and find ways to become the type of person they want?

By the sounds of it you are taking your manager’s feedback to either the wrong degree or just plain wrongly.
I‘m quite sure if your manager thought you were wrong for the job they’d just sack you. They haven’t and you’ve been doing it for a year. It sounds like they are just suggesting that you boost your confidence and project a more outgoing demeanour to the customer.
That’s how I read it.
As a manager if I said all that at an annual appraisal there’s no way it would mean I thought the person is wrong for the job. Also if they were wrong they would be gone long before a year.
I think you’re doing fine. Just maybe over sensitive and taking something as a criticism which wasn’t meant as such.
It’s your dream job. Don’t leave!
If you are still unsure, sit down with them and ask.

Do you like the job?

Does it pay well?

Do the hours suit you?

Do you feel you perform well and to the best of your abilities regardless of what your manager says?

If the answer to these is yes then I would stay put.

Nothing wrong with looking around for something better in the meantime but don't leave to become unemployed or go to a worse job.

Managers come and go and some managers just like to critique just because they can. Nod and smile.

I agree, if it's your dream job don't leave.

I'd go back to your manager and ask for specific examples of what they mean. Quiet, polite and friendly are not bad qualities in customer services, but perhaps they would like you to do more small talk etc (just guessing...)

Then it's up to you whether you feel you can / want to do that or not. For myself, I appear more outgoing in front-desk roles than I am in real-life. Like acting a role.
