My two year old has begun opening baby gates and worst of all his car seat as in completely undoing the whole harness when we're driving. Its not just our car seat either so it's not a brand thing.

Is this normal?! How on earth can I possibly safely drive him around when he can do this? I always pull over straight away if I can but obviously not always possible immediately.

Anyone got any tricks to stop this? I have one of the little straps that goes across his chest to stop him getting his arms out but now he just undoes the whole thing instead.

Well you might be able to use his skills to turn a profit when he’s older… in the meantime, could you give him something to distract him whilst he’s in the car seat? A toy he doesn’t play with at other times for example?

good luck!

My son was like this. Bribery and child lock were the only things that kept him safe.

Cable ties? And scissors in your handbag/glove compartment?

We have the twin girl version of this. She can climb anything and I once looked around and she had wriggled out of her very serious car harness and was sitting in the footwell.

We haven't found anything to hold her but just have a parent on permanent close watch and go to A&E for bumped heads more than I would like.

Gin. Gin helps.

My ds now 2 has been the same since 10mo
Anything to climb he's at the top. Any safety clip is a challenge to him

Mine was like this. We never found a solution but he grew out of it eventually. Have you tried taking the train instead? Semi serious question, our Houdini escaped the pram and baby leads too so it was the least worst option.

Velcro stickers on the button so that it's rough to touch?

villamariavintrapp · 10/09/2023 18:06

Also really shout so that he knows it's a big no!

Footprintsinthesand · 10/09/2023 18:12

When my DS did this I told him off in my scary mum voice that I reserve for really dangerous situations. Lots of people would hold their hands up in horror but it worked.

SuperSange · 10/09/2023 18:19

My son undid his car seat while I was on the motorway. I shouted so loud at him that he never did it again. I'm not usually a shouter, but that's not acceptable and he had to know it.

hellohelp · 10/09/2023 19:50

That's a great idea @villamariavintrapp I'm going to give this a try!

strangelytired · 10/09/2023 20:22

Mine did this. So stressful! Nothing I could do about the baby gate or child locks, but in the car I used to put mittens on them with straps on that were hard to take off like this:

For the car seat get an empty paper cup, cut a a lot out of the base of it, thread the seatbelt through it then slide the cup over the seatbelt socket thingy. Worked for my two escape artistes
