Drone constantly flying over back gardens

MikeRafone · 08/09/2023 10:41

I thought privacy in your own back garden was a given - ok a few windows from neighbours

But we have a drone that keeps flying over our gardens in the town where I live every Friday.

Im not keen on this and wonder what they are looking for?

Drones are classed as aircraft and shooting / throwing rocks etc would see you in court as if youd done that to a plane or glider.

See I think if you were driven to despair & had a moment of insanity when you threw a rock at a drone & have never been in trouble with the law they wouldn't send you to jail, certainly not on par with throwing rocks at a plane!

Plus police don't even come out for burglaries so...

I told you what the law said not a wild guess as to what might happen.

I imagine with the crispy 4k footage as evidence of you deliberately throwing a rock at it would see you buying someone a nice new drone plus whatever his solicitors managed to got awarded on top for stress or whatever else they could make up reasonably claim

@Thatladdo how many drones do you have?!

Two, why?

I wouldn't be worried about this at all!

Of course you own drones 😆.

Somewhereovertherainbowweighapie · 11/09/2023 06:07

How high is it? Could you throw a net over it?

BeenThereDoneThat101 · 11/09/2023 06:16

Flying small drones like that isn’t illegal but taking pictures of someone’s private property is.

You can even get into legal bother for having a ring doorbell which has sight of someone else’s front door for instance.

I would take it down with a hosepipe personally and then bin it. Once it’s in your back garden it’s essentially yours to do with as you see fit.

notimagain · 11/09/2023 07:20

Not really getting the scepticism....

FWIW I also own one (echoes of "I'm Spartacus"...🤔) - we live rurally, it has it's uses but it certainly doesn't get flown near other peoples homes...

Mind you it does send nice high definition images back to base in real time, quite handy if somebody did try something illegal, and decided to try and, to use the vernacular, "take it out".

Neither would the operator, you would be in the wrong and youd probably miss by a country mile unless it was really low in which case id say it deserved a "challenge".

Of course I own drones? Well, yes hence me commenting so much on this thread. Ive done a fair bit of training and am well aware of the laws memote, so sharing information with people.

If you or "people" are concerned, DO contact the police, they will also set you straight, most if not all have their own drone teams and someone who specialises in them will be more than happy to im sure.

memote · 11/09/2023 17:09

@Thatladdo no one cares about the info though!

For one the majority of the comments about hitting it with a hose or whatever are facetious. People are only annoyed about very low ones which as yourself said "deserved a challenge". And I'm not sure where you live but where I am you can steal a bicycle or commit burglary & be on CCTV & the police don't investigate it. You can even have the contact info for the people who stole your bike & the police don't do anything,...

So as I said should I accept the challenge of aiming for a (low) drone I really am not worried about the law 🤷🏻‍♀️

Somewhereovertherainbowweighapie · 12/09/2023 08:45

I wouldn’t be worried about getting in trouble. If someone is flying a drone over your house they deserve to lose it. This is a perfect opportunity for someone to invent a drone stopper. Maybe something that shoots a net? They would make a fortune.

Somewhereovertherainbowweighapie · 12/09/2023 10:05

@Thatladdo Thanks for the links. It’s good to know you can legally destroy a drone if it’s flying low over your house.

Irridescantshimmmer · 12/09/2023 10:38

Each drone is idetifiable.

They can be traced as they have a code which is unique, similar to a registration number for vehicles.

Contacting a local councillor is likely the best course of action.

However, if its hovering over someone like an enormous mosquito, or flying near windows then call the police on their none emergency number to report it.

notimagain · 12/09/2023 10:40

For info the UK Air Navigation Order (ANO) i.e. UK legislation, refers to drones as "Small Unmanned Aircraft"

The ANO, 2016, also states (Part 10, Chapter 1, Article 240)

" A person must not recklessly or negligently act in a manner likely to endanger an aircraft, or any person in an aircraft."

So whether you can really "fill you boots" without facing sanctions or not would I guess have to be argued in court, retrospectively...

Of course there's also the issue that of what happens if you did "destroy" a drone and it ended up clobbering a third party.....

Lindy2 · 12/09/2023 10:46

I'd be watering my garden one Friday evening with a hosepipe. Accidents happen...

Dotjones · 12/09/2023 11:02

The best way to get rid of it in my view is to buy your own drone and crash it into the other one when it's over your garden. This is easily explainable if it is relaying live video to the owner, you have the better argument that they were more at fault because they were flying over other people's property.

Whilst air rifles sound like a good idea it's very risky. One, the live video it transmits may serve as proof you committed criminal damage and two, firing a legally-held air rifle in a manner which damages other people's property or puts others at risk (eg if you miss the target, the ball bearing or "bullet" is still going to land somewhere) is something that will interest the police a lot more than a nosey drone user.

Never mind where an air gun pellet lands...aircraft (even little unmanned ones ) don't just vaporise if "destroyed" so you've got a much bigger problem if you decide to go ramming and a combined mass of over a kilo lands on some innocent party's car/house/child......

I do understand the annoyance inconsiderate and inappropriate drone flying must cause over densely populated residential areas but some of the solutions being suggested are, well, putting it politely not the most sensible.

I'd be posting on my local Facebook pages that the drone operator was trying to see into kids' bedrooms and was potentially a nonce. Let peer pressure do its work.

Don't like being called a nonce? Stop acting like one, then!

That's fucked up. There was no suggestion of that. Rightly or wrongly they were just flying a drop.. I can't believe people like you exist.

jc12689 · 12/09/2023 11:30

That would get me into even more trouble as here we are still on a hosepipe ban!

Not fucked up at all! The vast majority of people flying drones low in residential areas are peeping toms trying to snoop. Calling them out anonymously on social media is not the greater offence here.

Flying out in the countryside or coast is quite a different matter.

Flyingsafe · 23/08/2025 12:47

Hit it with a stone ? Only if you fancy a spell in prison, It is against the law to interfere with an unmanned aircraft, Definitely needs to learn the laws before commenting.

TheDandyLion · 23/08/2025 12:54

@Flyingsafe it's probably flown away by now, it was 2 years ago.

I do hate the world we live in now.
