Car insurance for teens

AIBU to think that £1600 for car ins for a teen on a £2k valued car is excessive? Any ideas as to cheaper insurers that we could try?

Thanks in advance

(And I know I am BU for squeezing this into AIBU for traffic!)

Have you put yourself in it too, that brings it down.

WicketWoo · 08/09/2023 08:23

Yes, my DH is on the policy with her.

A £2k car can still write off a £1m supercar - the car’s value isn’t the risk, the person behind the wheel is.

All you can do is try the usual comparison sites and insurers, to be honest with insurance rates increasing this year £1600 isn’t that bad.

WicketWoo · 08/09/2023 08:24

Interesting that you think it's not too bad

Have you tried specialist black box insurance?

Have you contacted direct line who don't appear on comparison sites?

£1,600 for a teenager is good. Does she have a BF as people in relationships have lower insurance. Weird what brings quotes down.

PosterBoy · 08/09/2023 08:26

Sounds average.

If she isn't driving it much, try a separate pay per miles policy with someone like marmalade

Cookerhood · 08/09/2023 08:26

DS1's was £1800 6 years ago when he passed his test in a £1000 car. Same for DS2 a couple of years later. It was worth it for us as the school bus was £900 each. It quickly went down after a year.

WicketWoo · 08/09/2023 08:26

Wondering if any insurer might be cheaper based on limiting the miles she drives. She probably drives 50 miles a month!

We could just hire her a limo for those trips based on the insurance cost!

£1600 isn't a bad quote, is it 1st year driving?
Premiums have gone up this year across the board, we're on year 2 and still paying around that. The value of the car isn't really particularly relevant, it's the risk that is insured, so the driver, type of car, usage and location are main factors.

GlitteryFarts · 08/09/2023 08:27

Unfortunately I think this is standard now. I passed my test 6 or 7 years ago in my late 20s and bought a banger for £750. Cheapest insurance I could find was £1800 that first year which I had to painfully suck up, over double the cost of the car ouch.

Waitingforsummer75 · 08/09/2023 08:28

Try ticker, they offer a pay per mile policy I believe, although driving less doesn't necessarily mean cheaper premiums

BoohooWoohoo · 08/09/2023 08:28

My teens have a black box policy with cap on the number of miles that they can do per year.
Strangely tweaking the job brought the policy down too - retail workers are less risky than baristas with my DD's insurance company.

DustyLee123 · 08/09/2023 08:29

When you divide that figure into 12 I don’t think it’s bad, presuming she’s recently passed and is under 21.
Do try Direct Line if you haven’t already.

Who is this one with, please?

DH went off and bought DS17 a car, I warned him to make sure it was insurable, DS passes test, first 5 insurers wouldn’t touch him, first quote was £11k 😳
Eventually got him insured with LV for £5k. They are not on comparison sites but were by far the cheapest I could find.

WicketWoo · 08/09/2023 08:32

She passed her test 6 months ago and has had her car for a year and a half - so a little bit on no claims discount.

All good advice - thank you all.

It’s quite low to be fair. My brothers when he passed was nearly 3k as he was 18 and in London. That was 4ish years ago
Have you looked at the tips on Martin Lewis? Like the start date being 21-28 days in advance. Is there anyone else that can go on the policy as well as DH? I found with my insurance it went down on some insurers (not all!) if I put my DP and my dad on it, not just DP.
