I've seen several people wearing a mask in shopping centres and on buses and trains.

Because they can, because they want to, because they may have a cold, or indeed even covid and need to go out so protect to an extent by wearing a nask

why do you care

ChellyT · 08/09/2023 01:51

I still wear one when I public transport because of dirty fuckers not covering their sneezing or coughs. Poor personal hygiene, BO and breathe. People who are clearly not well but are still out and about (this maybe because they have to for financial or personal reasons)

I was just about to post the same thing, but you beat me to it.

They categorically do not stop the wearer catching a virus nor spreading a virus. Many people who wore one religiously still caught covid.

It's akin to medieval people carrying a talisman to ward off the plague.

Hmm, who am I going to trust, you or a Cambridge University research team 🤔https://www.cam.ac.uk/research/news/upgrading-ppe-for-staff-working-on-covid-19-wards-cut-hospital-acquired-infections-dramatically

Upgrading PPE for staff working on COVID-19 wards cut hospital-acquired infections dramatically

If masks worked there would have been no need for all those rules about how many people could be in a room together, or meet up. "Non essential shops" need not have closed. People could have been allowed to go into the office and all other workplaces and travel between towns and villages.

The government would have said, meet whoever you want, go wherever you want, just wear a bit of flimsy paper over your gob.

Explain that, @DisquietintheRanks

Apply a bit of logic, please.

All masks are not created equal. FFP2 and FFP3 are effective, others (certainly flimsy paper ones) less so. There seem to be a lot of people who haven’t really paid attention to the difference, and assume that if a badly fitting flimsy mask isn’t effective, no mask is.

So many sneering responses. I genuinely ask how it affects you. You might not think it does any good but the key question is does it harm you?

I so let wear a mask

My guess is that a lot of the sneering people feel uncomfortable/triggered by seeing someone wearing a mask, because it reminds them of the pandemic and they want to forget about it. That’s totally understandable, but it’s unreasonable to expect other people not to take common sense health precautions just so you won’t feel triggered.

This has to be one of the most ignorant posts I have ever seen, and being in education, I am very interested in working out how an adult who has been through a pandemic can end up so ignorant.

The first thought is obviously illiteracy, but this poster does seem to be able to read and write. They can't be fully literate, but they do seem to be at least partly so.

The second thought is innumerate, and I suspect this is also part of the answer, as they are clearly incapable of appreciating probabilities and obviously adding, subtracting or multiplying them is completely beyond them.

The third thought is how did they get through compulsory education with so little understanding of science,? and for this I actually blame the exam boards, who have made rote learning a way of getting through to at least middle grades, without any actual comprehension of the material

There is the total failure of critical thinking, but that again I would put down to the science education, as there is very little critical thinking in the UK education system, and again, the science exams are set up to favour rote learning for the middle and lower grades, rather then critical thinking.

But it does go beyond all of these things, and I can't help but feel some of this ignorance is wilful, and a deliberate choice, and of course there will always be people who chose deliberate wilful ignorance, look at Trump supporters in USA! and there is nothing that can be done about that - in a free country, people have the option of deliberate, wilful ignorance if they choose. In that sense, there is really nothing that even the best education system in the world could have done to help

Gosh this is such a cringe response 😬

I mean I don’t particularly give a shit if people wear masks, or don’t wear masks. I won’t be wearing one myself but it doesn’t affect me so why would I care?

I do however think we are utterly fucked if another (worse) pandemic hits us, because there is absolutely no way they’ll be able to force lockdown compliance to the same degree again. Hell, I’d be reluctant. After party gate I felt like a bit of an idiot for following the rules.

DameWhiskers · 08/09/2023 02:49

@KatyKopykat

I didn't say it's a problem.

Your vague, goady OP implied it was a problem.

mathanxiety · 08/09/2023 03:02

@KatyKopykat

It's clearly something you think they shouldn't be doing or you wouldn't have worded your thread title the way you did.

Why are people still wearing masks is not a neutral question.

Awittyfool · 08/09/2023 03:07

I think people are being disingenuous with the “who cares”.
Wearing something over your face isn’t the norm unless it’s a scarf on a freezing day. It took a lot of persuasion during the pandemic and it was accepted only once everyone was required to do so.
It was very notable how quickly no one was wearing them once the pandemic was over.

Mask wearing is definitely on the rise so it’s a valid question.

echt · 07/09/2023 22:58

You don't know what brainwashing is, do you?

I think she doesn't know what irony is.

Wearing something over your face isn’t the norm unless it’s a scarf on a freezing day. It took a lot of persuasion during the pandemic and it was accepted only once everyone was required to do so.

Bollocks. Most people I know readily wore a mask once the benefits of doing so were made clear. Not one single person I know well waited until after it was legally required of them. I know some people had to be “forced” to do it, but by no stretch of the imagination was it the majority.

Nobody at all is being forced to do it now so it’s clear people do it purely because they prefer it. Pre-pandemic I wouldn’t have really thought of it, not because I would have especially objected, but just because it wasn’t a cultural norm in my country, unlike places in Asia.

Now it is more of a cultural norm to wear a mask if you’re ill or trying to lower your risk of catching a virus and a lot of people are very satisfied with that.

CurlewKate · 08/09/2023 04:20

Because they want to protect themselves and other people. Simple really

If seatbelts worked there'd be no need for airbags.

Imagine thinking a bag of air is strong enough to protect people from several tonnes of metal.

Riapia · 08/09/2023 04:45

Why all the excuses?
It’s obvious people are only doing it to piss the OP off.
What other reason could there be?
😉😁😁😁

UglyMcUgface · 08/09/2023 04:53

I wear them to hide my ugly face.
I've worn them for years before Covid.
Still do.
Cos I'm still ugly.
So there.

Wenlock12 · 08/09/2023 05:05

God I hope we get another mask mandate, just to piss off people like you, who can’t seem to stand it when people manage their own business

Wenlock12 · 08/09/2023 05:17

Also why are you asking questions which have really obvious answers? Has the Covid damaged your frontal lobes?

ElFupacabra · 08/09/2023 06:06

If this really wasn’t about starting a judgemental thread then I feel a bit sorry for you as you have zero critical thinking skills and that must make navigating daily life very difficult,

Wenlock12 · 08/09/2023 05:17

Covid does indeed cause brain damage (brain "fog" being the milder end, not yet cleat how far it reverses, if at all)

Scans reveal how Covid may change the brain - BBC News

"Those who had recently recovered from Covid found it a bit harder to perform complex mental tasks"

Personally, I don't think it's a good idea for people, DC especially, be repeatedly reinfected.

I'm doing all I can to avoid having Covid over and over again - including masks in most public indoor places. We don't know anything like enough about the effects of this disease long-term, but are finding out that it can damage multiple body systems

User16328715 · 08/09/2023 07:00

There has been a resurgence of threads with people worrying about Covid so it is probably those people, as long as I am not urged to wear one, others can do as they like

Chiaseedling · 08/09/2023 07:05

Probably cos it’s doing the rounds again. I know of a few people with it inc DD. Maybe people don’t want to catch it cos they’re going away/already have long covid or had a bad dose last time/are immune suppressed.
I mean I wouldn’t generally wear a mask now but if I was, for example, about to go on holiday I might avoid busy areas for a few days beforehand.

Splishsplashsplooshsplosh · 08/09/2023 07:07

See what I don't understand is the people I've seen recently wearing a mask that only covers the mouth but leaving their nose out.
When we had to wear them that obviously made sense - they were only wearing them because they were obliged to, they didn't want to so they were doing as little as they could to get away with it. But now we don't have to, why would you do that?? I get why people might still want to wear one and I obviously get why most don't but why on earth would anyone partially wear one since they don't have to? Seems crazy to me. And I've seen quite a few in the last few weeks.

Laurama91 · 08/09/2023 07:10

Just because they want to. Last winter masks became mandatory in my doctors, I assume it will be again this year. I guess they found it helped. I can definitely say I didnt have as many colds when we had to wear masks

Stroopwaffels · 08/09/2023 07:18

Just sharing for the community-minded peeps

And it's this sort of language which gets people's backs up as it is loaded with judgement. People who want to wear masks are "community-minded". Therefore, people who don't are not. Wear masks or not, I don't care. But please don't start passing judgement or expecting others to wear a mask because you are choosing to.
