To say the word is CUE and if you don’t know that then why not use a different word?

So many people on here want to use the word “cue” as in “cue DS throwing his toys out of the pram.” People seem to want to use this phrase much more often in writing here than I would hear people use it in real life.

But why use a word when you don’t understand what the word is or how to spell it?

I’ve seen so many different versions in posts on MN - “queue,” “Q”and just now “qué,” which is the most ridiculous yet.

AIBU to say the word you are looking for is “CUE” and if you are not sure then maybe use a different phrase?

Do you understand how spelling and written language evolved, or rather was stymied for several centuries by gatekeeping in publication?

The advent of the internet has democratised written communication and we’re now living through one of the most exciting periods of language development.

Take a look at pre-printing press documents and the variety of spellings that abounded. It’s really interesting to see how some of the most learned and intelligent people “misspelled” words, or to see how the sound of words has changed- eg the L in should/could/would is always present so presumably was spoken if other words are written phonetically.

Linguistics is absolutely fascinating.

Linguistics is absolutely fascinating.

I was very amused by the etymology I linked to upthread which suggests that 'cue' may have arisen from spelling out "Q" which was used in stage directions in earlier centuries.

OMG, I’ve only just got rid of an Engelbert Humperdinck ear worm after reading Quando in that link earlier. And now you’ve gone and repeated it. Grrr 😂😂

There's lots of words people don't know how to spell if they've only ever heard them said.

I see que/queue a lot here though. I've wondered if people start to doubt themselves using cue because they see queue/que so much and start using the wrong word in error assuming everyone else is right.

I think this is exactly what’s happening. People see the wrong spelling all the time on online forums and maybe absorb it.
Same for “break” instead of “brake”, and even “speach” instead of “speech” which I’ve only ever seen on MN.
Usually the meaning is clear, but not always. I read a technical document recently and they used “a break” instead of “a brake”, which changed the meaning.
Reading books, a variety of books, really helps with spelling because you see the correct spellings over and over again. Reading things on the internet doesn’t, because there’s a lot of material that’s written by people who can’t spell well and which isn’t proofread and corrected by editors.

There are many words that confuse people, having a dyslexic child helps me understand that spelling the word can be difficult and usually done phonetically which can give the wrong word. Also, so many silent letters 🙄 for me, I actually struggle with the word 'Being', 'Been', I can't for the life of me work out which one goes where. 😳😳

Trez1510 · 07/09/2023 18:02

I used to get irritated by others misusing or misspelling words.

I've unclenched since it, eventually, dawned on me the two wisest and most practical men I know are men who can't spell for toffee. They also misuse words orally. They don't mind being gently corrected as they realise it prevents other (small minded) people considering themselves superior to them based solely on their linguistic ability. 👍

Kdubs1981 · 07/09/2023 18:18

They are not using it in our Etsy though? They are spelling it incorrectly,

Agree. I hate the whole "cue", "fast forward" thing anyway. They're stage directions, they don't belong in what is usually a fairly mundane (and possibly quite boring) anecdote.

But this what makes the English language so rich? There are words from all sorts of outlandish sources, war, arcane sports, other languages.

@UnsolicitedOpinions

Have you fucked up telling everyone that someone else has fucked up?

People in glass houses.....

🤣🙌🏻

Listen I have an Olympic medal in pedantry when required, but OP's logic is flawed. They are not using the wrong word. They are using the right word in context, but do not know how to spell it. The meaning/context is correct. The spelling is not.

But again, pointing stuff out like this on the internet just makes you look like a pillock, not a very clever, well educated person (which I suspect was the intention).

Being supercilious is not an attractive trait

Kdubs1981 · 07/09/2023 18:36

@AffIt, it used to be 8, so at least it's improving!

Caswallonthefox · 07/09/2023 18:39

I find it's more often cue/que instead of queue. The most I have ever done and will ever do is, have quiet mutter to myself and carry on reading.
Ds1 can't spell for toffee, ds2 can. They both went to the same school, they are both NT.
I was educated in the 80's so half the punctuation and grammar wasn't taught then, but I can spell due to only having a paper dictionary because predictive text, spell check and the Internet didn't exist then.

Scatterbrainbox · 07/09/2023 18:42

I reckon that was probably an autocorrect...

Old enough for this discussion to "cue" Manuel for me 😁

I think of Manuel every time someone writes ‘que’.
