Back to School Photos in local paper

When will people drop this obsession with photographs of their children being put on the Internet and Social Media.

Loocal rag asked people to send on their back to school pics. Parents did and it was put on Facebook. Somebody pointed out that the school uniform and name badges were visible and so therefore was it a good idea?

Pics of school children in their uniforms on Facebook.
Why is even of interest to anyone apart from the parents and grandparents ?
Can't see why anyone would want to see pics of random kids anyway.

What's news about that? We all went to school. Big deal.

Feel sorry for children whose parents have done that.
Social media and stupidity at its worst.

Perhaps it will be taken down now?

Why f do I you think it will be 'taken down now'?

VyeBrator · 06/09/2023 17:26

No-one cares except the parents and they'll be the same parents who would hit the roof if someone posted photos of them without permission.

I really wish the law would do something about all these photos of kids online, that the kids haven't/can't consent to.

But as long as everyone tells the parents their kids are gawjuss hun 🙄🙄

girlfriend44 · 06/09/2023 17:27

Err because people have commented on the safety aspect of it of course.

What interest is it to anyone apart from the parents and family anyway?
Going back to school has been around forever.

I agree. My children are 11,13 and 15 and we have never posted pictures of them online and have told family members the same. Hate seeing pictures of kids plastered everywhere.

FloweryName · 06/09/2023 17:27

I love seeing my schools ‘My first Class’ photo in the local paper! They send a photographer every year and there’s a big spread of all the local schools reception classes. The parents who don’t want/can’t have their children in it opt out, and it’s a nice little keepsake for the school and the parents who do want it.

I can’t see the problem. My children were seen in public in their identifying school uniforms numerous times.

This.

Papers are for news too, not back to school pics. Idiotic local rags.

girlfriend44 · 06/09/2023 17:43

It's not that, it's individual parents sending in pics. Alot are saying it's a bad idea.

So printed with parental permission

Same around here. It's a big deal and the photos are lovely.

Phos · 06/09/2023 17:52

Do you have an issue with kids photos generally or is it just the first day of school ones that makes your blood pressure rise?

OnAMidnightTrainToGeorgia · 06/09/2023 18:21

@girlfriend44 Err because people have commented on the safety aspect of it of course.

Which is??

LunaLoveFood · 06/09/2023 18:23

Our local paper sends a photographer round to all the local primary schools and photographs each reception class and publishes the photos.
If parents opt out.of photographs then their child is not included.
If parents have been asked to send photos in they obviously have no problem sharing that info, anyone that did wouldn't do it.

DinnaeFashYersel · 06/09/2023 18:27

My school photos were published in the local paper 45 years ago. This is not a new thing.

Newspapers do this because this means hundreds of parents and grandparents will buy copies of the paper.

If you don't like it you don't need to buy the paper, read the article etc.

jolaylasofia · 06/09/2023 18:29

i don't understand people moaning about kids photos. what exactly is the safety issue? 90% of wierdo abusers already know the child they abuse. the rest could just as easily see your child in their uniform in the street. We live in a digital age. If you don't want to don't post pics of your own kids but don't harp on to people that want to.

OnAMidnightTrainToGeorgia · 06/09/2023 18:31

Fully expecting the OP to come back and announce it's all been 'taken down' now 😆

Needmorelego · 06/09/2023 18:39

It's a small celebration of life and community.
A big point of local papers (which are more likely to be more online than printed now) is to mostly celebrate what's happening or happened in the community.
So that's photos of people (including children) enjoying themselves at things like the local summer festival, competition winners, the person who raised money for a charity, the fella celebrating his 100th birthday, local sports teams celebrating their wins, local flower bed that people have helped create, pics of the crochet post box toppers....and happy pictures of local children reaching a big landmark in their life.
Don't like it - don't send your pictures then.

Did you read the post, this was a Facebook post.

Do you have friends on Facebook who are not allowed to view pictures of children? I'm involved in safeguarding. If there is not a specific risk to a child then if they consent I don't see the issue? Please let me know if I have missed something.

curaçao · 06/09/2023 20:46

So are the children's names printed, otherwise I don't get the issue at all??

girlfriend44 · 06/09/2023 20:53

Still there lol.

You haven't explained why you think it will be taken down? It's a local newspaper showing photos they have been sent by parents. What's the issue?

OnAMidnightTrainToGeorgia · 07/09/2023 22:58

Is it still there I wonder !??!

Excuse me how dare you not find outrage in everything. I do think it is different children being posted online as the net is much wider and as most people have really crap privacy settings on their social media you could find out tonnes about a child from a parent invariably commenting aw my gorgeous cherub on it. But I agree photos printed in the local paper are sweet and has been a thing for decades without issue.
