Shared courtyard with neighbours but it’s actually the dogs toilet!

As above really, should this really be the case, my son and his wife share a small paved courtyard with 3 other neighbours, one set of neighbours use it as their dogs toilet and yesterday in this heat it was rank!

They don’t believe they can do anything about it, surely the Landlord of the couple with the dogs can do something?

Dogs have to go. Owners have to clean up.

VickyEadieofThigh · 06/09/2023 14:54

I lived abroad for a few years, in an apartment (2nd floor) which had balconies front and back. We adopted a street dog - and took him out for walks 4 times a day (for the first month, we took him out more often, so that he understood what we wanted). He never, ever, toileted (wee OR poo) in the apartment or on the balconies, because he understood that this was all part of his 'living' territory and he got ample time to go to the toilet on his walks. He caught on very quickly that if he wanted to go, he should go and stand by the door and we responded quickly by harnessing him and taking him out.

These people should be doing exactly this - training their dog on regular walks so that it does not go (and last thing at night, when they just want to send the dog out for its last wee- they need to put it on the lead and take it out elsewhere - WE did) in the yard.

This is gross, i have a dedicated dog yard (which i fully own!) and have to bleach it regularly to get rid of the smell - jeyes and kennel disinfectant arent enough.

deveronvalley · 06/09/2023 15:00

Careful with jeyes- my husband insists on using it and the smell is much stronger and lingers more than anything our dog might produce! I can’t have windows open for days!

ickky · 06/09/2023 15:17

Jeyes Fluid is very toxic for dogs and cats, can be fatal.

Contact landlord, get them told, disgusting.

TabbyM · 06/09/2023 15:21

IME people who do this can't be reasoned with (shared garden alas) so contact landlords if possible.

MonumentalLentil · 06/09/2023 15:53

Ohlord56 · 06/09/2023 13:39

Can Jeyes be used around animals?
Im going to suggest the complaint, it can’t continue, it’s so unhygienic & unhealthy!

Google tells me this on a pet site
Quick Answer
Yes, Jeyes Fluid disinfectant is harmful to dogs. The amount of harm this product can cause varies, depending on the dose and exposure. In extreme cases, Jeyes Fluid can be fatal to dogs.

As far as I am aware it is OK once dry but it really stinks too.

Ohlord56 · 06/09/2023 17:28

Thanks to everyone, I have passed this all in, oh dear, I was round today and it’s disgusting today, again the heat isn’t helping.

Ive said if the LL doesn’t enforce change they should look to move as they will never be able to enjoy the outdoor space.

In the meantime I have also suggested the LL should pay to have it power washed and disinfected as the tenants aren’t going to!

Got no problems with dogs, just some of the scummy owners.

Ohlord56 · 09/09/2023 17:01

Totally agree, the poor dogs don’t get walked so have to use the area for the toilet.

Another very hot day with dog poo and piss lying around so no one can sit there today 🤢🤢

Thatsmorethanhalf · 09/09/2023 17:12

Whole streets where the kids play near me suffer from the same problem. Cities are no place for dogs really

ScribblingPixie · 09/09/2023 17:19

Using a shared yard for your dog is so gross. But if for argument's sake I did I'd pick up straight away; water wee down using a water/white vinegar mix. Then clean the whole floor very regularly with a brush and washing up liquid/water/white vinegar mix. This is definitely one for the landlord.

Ohlord56 · 09/09/2023 17:29

I totally agree, they usually leave the pop lying for a day sometimes 2, doesn’t seem like much but not in a space that others are expected to use. The pee, usually just drys in, if they do hose it’s just enough and no more, so it dilutes but just sits right across the yard which is all concrete, not nice!

Environmental Health could write to them. Give the EH department a ring.

Sweep the muck down to the offenders door then use diluted Jeyes fluid in a bucket of water & a stiff yard broom for getting rid of the stench. Used with care there shouldn’t be a problem for the dog.

If the neighbour doesn’t like the aroma, he knows how to stop your family using it, doesn’t he?

WiddlinDiddlin · 09/09/2023 18:33

They absolutely can (the dog owners) and the people who have to share the yard can report, not just to the landlord but to the local authority/EH as well.

The owners can:

Pick up poo several times a day.
Jet wash
Use suitable disinfectants/de-odorisering products

We have 3 dogs, we jet wash 3 times a week in summer, poo pick twice a day (more if someones done something truly awful and we spot it).

We use a product called Odorkill which comes in a variety of flavours, I've gone for peardrops but theres bubblegum, cherry, pine... probably more.

It is specifically designed for getting rid of the smell of urine and shite from concrete/wood etc.

There is no excuse with a shared yard, for there to be turds sat out, they should pick up immediately as they should on a walk.

Back in the dim and distant days of a shared yard, I had a spray bottle of deodoriser, so I'd go out with that and poo bag, dog would do the necessary, I'd pick up the poo and spray the wee if it was on the concrete part, or stick the hose on it if it was the grass bit.

WiddlinDiddlin · 09/09/2023 18:34

Please don't use Jeyes, it isn't the dogs fault their owner is a lazy stinky fucker and it is incredibly toxic stuff that needs to be fully rinsed off after use.

Greensleeves · 09/09/2023 18:43

Never mind whether/how they clean it up, nobody should be using a shared space as a dog toilet! It's antisocial behaviour. If they can't manage their dogs without having them shit and piss in the shared courtyard, then they can't have dogs.

MrsCarson · 09/09/2023 18:47

Power wash it all over to their door. They are disgusting

neilyoungismyhero · 09/09/2023 18:54

I'd be inclined to pressure hose it towards their property and let them clean it up. It's a bio hazard isn't it? My dog pees up the washing line first thing in the morning and it smells straight away if I didn't hose it I couldn't sit out there.

Aquamarine1029 · 09/09/2023 18:58

I would keep reporting this to the landlord until something was done. How revolting. It never ceases to amaze me how disgusting some people are.

ScribblingPixie · 09/09/2023 19:01

I would keep reporting this to the landlord until something was done.

This. It's completely unacceptable. Hold the landlord responsible.
