Thickened womb lining / peri / Health anxiety aibu to be freaking out

perimenoworrier · 06/09/2023 09:38

I recently had an ultrasound due to the last 2 or 3 periods having some brown spotting mid cycle . I have a lot of peri / meno symptoms as well, I'm 44 soon

I went for my follow up gp appointment and everything looked normal apart from a small amount of endometriosis which apparently is nothing to worry about. But I also have a thickened womb lining

I've been referred to gynae next week (I am private which is why it's so quick). But I'm scared in case i need a hysteroscopy which gp said was a possibility. not worried because of the procedure but because it will be more waiting and worrying 😭 . Plus more money as I'm paying privately

I have horrendous health anxiety so I'm freaking out. I daren't google. so i wanted to know if anyone else has had this and whether it was just hormonal and wasn't anything sinister

The dr said I shouldn't worry and that it is common in pre menopausal women esp those who are near or in peri. She offered to refer me on the nhs so I did not have to pay but advised that if it was NHS it would be about an 18 month wait in our area which reassures me slightly as it would not be considered urgent on NHS.

I'm also 3 days late on my period (defo not pg) , last month I was 2 days early. Before this I was very regular so I am wondering if this is another peri symptom

Any advice or hand holds would be useful . My gynae appt is next Tuesday.

Also @PrimroseSilk I hope you're getting treatment for the adenomyosis as I hear it can be painful Flowers

Haggisfish3 · 07/01/2024 17:39

Adenomyosis is when the uterus lining cells grow inside the uterus muscle. Those cells must have been introduced to the muscle somehow…which is what makes me wonder at the link between adenomyosis and Caesarian sections. Seems obvious to me that a Caesarian will involve uterus lining cells ending up in the muscle wall during the cutting.

Had similar when I was early 50s - oddly, GP (female, same age as me) didn't identify it as menopause related, and just treated me for heavy periods for over a year, resulting in DVT.
Just be thankful you have access to private care to identify the problems - if you can't afford private care for all procedures, ensure your GP is fully aware of all test results, and refers you ASAP.
I found (after a couple of years) that familiarising myself with NICE guidelines made me far more engaged and able to argue my case for the treatment I needed.

Oh I'm not private 😳😳 I wish. I had the initial gp appointment, ultrasound and gynae appointment privately but I could not justify paying for the hysteroscopy as was around £2500 . Fortunately the gynae said it was not urgent and she'd be happy for me to wait on nhs which is what I did and now got my appointment next week😩🤢.

Oh my god how on earth did heavy periods result in a DVT ??? That's terrifying ...hope you're okay now x

ThinWomansBrain · 07/01/2024 19:44

Yes, I'm fine now, thanks - it was about 12+ years ago. GP prescribed increasingly higher doses of tranexamic acid for over a year - it 'stops' or in my case allegedly reduces periods by thickening the blood - the A&E Doctor was in no doubt that that had been the cause of the DVT.
My point about familiarising yourself with the NICE guidelines is that you'll know when you're not being offered the right treatment - I should have protested way before the DVT, and probably gone to the GP a lot sooner.
It was probably about 18 months in all before my first hysteroscopy that revealed the thickened womb lining (& fibroids), because the GP didn't refer me for so long.
You've had the reassurance from the gynae that it's not super urgent, and you have the appointment scheduled - hope that it all goes well, try not to worry about it too much.
I had both hysteroscopies under anaesthetic (unrelated reasons) - I had more pain from the canula than the after effects of the hysteroscopy.

Best of luck @janicegarvey I have read your thread with interest and hope all goes well for you. I’m booked for my first gynie/ hysteroscopy appointment in a couple of weeks and anxious doesn’t come close!!! I feel your worry 💐

I'm so nervous now it's unreal 😢 I kept waking in the night panicking , in 24 hours I'll be on my way there

Going through something similar myself. Thickened endometrial lining, and suspected Endo. I’m only 26 though so not peri.

I was referred to a private specialist too and just waiting on that to come in, but my doctor seems to think it’s all Endo related.

I had the same symptoms, bleeding mid cycle and suddenly irregular periods. Sometimes early, sometimes late. No one I’ve spoken to seems to think it’s sinister, so that’s something.

Best of luck in your appointment Tuesday, and feel free to PM if you need a chat!

Did you have your appointment yet ? Hope was okay if so x

Thank you

I will do. I am so scared 🥺🥺🥺🥺

janicegarvey · 10/01/2024 17:11

Just wanted to update

it wasn’t that bad - it only took a few mins and I had loads of gas and air . I’ve got a small polyp which the dr has referred me to get removed at a later date but not urgently as he’s not worried as it looks a “normal” one. They said I could have this done under GA which will be preferable

He said the womb thickening doesn’t look anything to worry about but they’ve done a biopsy anyway . So hopefully good news. I’m glad it’s over and I'll try not to worry too much waiting for the results.

iamyourequal · 10/01/2024 19:37

@janicegarvey Well done you getting it done! I am pleased it went well.

DeepRoseHedgehog · 03/03/2024 05:44

Hi all.

I have read this thread with interest as going through something similar.

@janicegarvey glad all went OK ❤️. How are things now?

Please may I ask how thick your womb linings were when you had these issues?

TIA. Xx

I'm so sorry you're going through this too

I still hadn't heard anything almost 7 weeks later. so I decided to make a drs appointment today as my anxiety has been through the Roof

But it’s good news. dr checked the system read the histology report, and relayed it back and assured me absolutely nothing untoward was found at all .

They actually had these results on Jan 26th . But have just sat on them while I've been wanting to know if I'm okay or not

I am obviously massively relieved I am okay but tbh I’m really pissed off how long it’s taken to relay them to me. I mean if I hadn’t have gone drs today would they have even bothered ?? How hard would it have been to send a letter out

I have decided to take out private healthcare cover because I can't go through anything like this again.

janicegarvey · 03/03/2024 10:14

@DeepRoseHedgehog

I am not actually sure how thick measurement wise my womb lining is as no one told me, but if I remember correctly it was one area of slight thickness rather than the whole thing

But to reassure you they did say it's very common and usually nothing to worry about esp in peri menopause age women.

Good luck and let us know how you get on. Have you got a date for your hysteroscopy yet ? Xxx

DeepRoseHedgehog · 05/03/2024 23:00

Hi @janicegarvey.

Great that you now know that everything is ok ❤️.
So bad though that they couldn't have just let you know, rather than leaving you in limbo & then having to chase it up yourself.

So bit of history from me, I'm nearly 37, have PCOS & years ago did have a lap that showed some endo.
IVF for all children, long journey.
Then 2 years ago I had bleeding for 7 months & when I had a scan it showed my womb lining was still 13mm even though I'd been bleeding. Referred to gynaecology, consultant took one look at my file and said it would be due to the PCOS & the best thing would be to have a marina coil. I wasn't keen, but felt there was no other choice so had it done.
Fast forward to about a month ago, I had alot of pelvic pain, fever, felt rough - went to GP, she can't find my coil 🤦‍♀️ and had to send me to A&E, diagnosed with Pelvic inflammatory disease, which they said could be due to the missing coil (they also couldn't find it). 2 weeks of antibiotics & a scan the following week which shows the coil apparently is in the right place 🤦‍♀️ but the lady scanning says my womb lining is 10mm which is thicker than expected for someone who has the coil. They said results would go to the gp within a couple of days. I left it a week to be sure. So tried to get an appt end of last week to be told the results were going to the Dr that requested the scan (at the hospital) I said that's not what I was told & they said they don't have the results, so I have to chase the hospital for them 😑😫. And that's where I am now, I haven't been able to get through the hospital yet.

And so really I'm just wondering if this lining issue should be looked into? Considering when it was thick before it just got blamed on my PCOS even though it wasn't normal for me to bleed so much (my periods were pretty much non existent) and now it's still thicker than it should be even though I have the coil. And I'm confused as to why I've had this horrible Pelvic infection if the coil is in the right place 🤷‍♀️.
I can't find any info on what the lining should be when you have a coil.
And to top it all off I'm pretty sure I'm peri menopausal, but haven't broached this with the GP yet.

So sorry for waffling, but just feel so stuck.

If you've read this far - thank you.
Xx

janicegarvey · 06/03/2024 16:34

God what a nightmare

And the infection sounds so painful and horrible

As far as I understand it from the investigations I've had, if there's womb thickening they are meant to investigate it and do a biopsy

However you are young so it is highly unlikely to be due to anything concerning. It's more worrying if seen in post menopausal women. but I really do think they should check it to make sure xx
