How ill is too I'll to fly?

I'm sat in my hotel room with a horrible cough and ear ache, and diarrhoea (what a combo). I've had no sleep and my transport comes in 5 hrs for a 4 hour flight home.

What do I do? I've never claimed on insurance before, and all my documents just talk of hospital stays (and death 🙃).

Do people just suck it up and fly?

Sorry to hear about the doc, hope it goes OK tonight.

Talk to your GP when you get home OP, you might be able to get a retrospective letter from them for your insurance. We’ve just done that for DD, she fell ill on holiday, we managed to get her home but she was supposed to go on an activity holiday the next day and tested positive for covid that morning! GP has provided letter for insurance no problem.

Sorry to hear you’re so poorly, and well done you for doing the right thing not flying. Hope you don’t end up too out of pocket.

Well done for trying. Hope you feel better soon. Flowers

Don’t fly. It’s so selfish. I’d be fuming if someone sat near me was obviously unwell.

Glad you've recovered a bit. Take some imodium for your comfort! Please wear a mask, FFP3 if possible. Hope you feel better once you're home.

OP already cancelled one flight and has tried to get a doctor note for insurance but the doctor said they can fly with to those symptoms so won’t give a note. What more do you want OP to do? They’re going to have to fly.

Well done for doing the right thing but sorry you are having to pay for it.

I flew back from Europe last week and due to the storms / turbulence they didn’t allow passengers to use the toilets for most of the flight!!! One elderly lady had a HUGE fight with cabin crew and used it anyway. It was a bit grim all round.

Zanatdy · 07/09/2023 07:57

Bit late as you’ve found it out but highly unlikely insurance would pay out for that. I’d have taken Imodium and flown home.

notimagain · 07/09/2023 08:25

Imodium may have done it's thing for the OP but the reported earache would bother me just as much, if not more so, than diarrhoea I was due to get on a flight as a passenger.

You might be able to control your bowels with drugs, but you can be absolutely f'd in flight in a very painful way if your ears and/or sinuses cannot equalise the air pressure.

The UK aviation regulators advice CAA advice posted upthread on flying with ear infections was pretty clear, so is the more user friendly UK NHS:

"If you are suffering from an ear or sinus infection you may experience intense pain during take-off and landing.

  • You should discuss this with a doctor prior to flying as it may potentially cause an injury within your ear."

I really hope the doctor involved in this actually had a look and made sure as best they could that the OP could clear their ears before OK'ing the journey...
