To be annoyed DH had the oven and the heating on today

It was 30 degrees here today and DH was working from home. When I got from work he had the oven on cooking roast potatoes. Then I realised the heating was also on - turned out he'd got the boiler serviced today and the engineer had left a valve open. Now the house is boiling!

This is partially light hearted as to give DH his due dinner was yummy and he did ring the engineer and get the heating turned off. But still, AIBU to be somewhat annoyed our house has been unnecessarily heated??

And can anyone beat this for poor heat management today?

How did he not realise the heating was on?
How else was he supposed to cook?

Strathyre · 05/09/2023 20:38

Well I normally try to cook things on the hob when its hot, the quicker the better, because it heats the house less. Maybe that's just me.

As for the heating, he had noticed, I think that's what annoyed me, he was all like, "oh yeah, the radiator in the other room was hot too," when I pointed it out.

I know in very warm weather you can supposedly fry eggs on the pavement, and admittedly it has been VERY warm today, but even so - I think he'd have struggled to cook the potatoes without the oven.

AutumnCrow · 05/09/2023 20:41

I don't think roast potatoes are compulsory. Other foods are available.

Very poor form

Needs improvement

YABU. I cook things in the oven when I want to cook something that needs to ge cooked in the oven. And your dh didn't leave the valve open.

The oven thing would not bother me. I find the hob more hot in hot weather unless he leaves the door of the oven open for ages when he takes then out. Also if he is working from home it might be easier to put things in oven rather than having pots boil over etc.

The heating thing I find odd that he did not notice but to be fair he probably assumed it was left turned off and the heat was just due to weather.

It's ok. I'm only here for the pointless argument.

outsurance · 05/09/2023 20:44

Was he not supposed to cook?

The engineer dropped the ball re the heating not your DH.

If I'm working I'm working I won't have time to run after engineers and you'd be lucky if I cooked dinner at all

Not just you. I use a microwave/oven so I don’t have to watch over anything and the hob for under 15 min if not those it’s all cold fruit, deli meats, sandwiches, salads, ice lollies. Kitchen is hottest room in the house and the only person willing to sit in there for long periods is DH because he runs cold. The kids and I run warm.

So weird that you would police what your husband cooks.

If the sexes were reversed here and a woman said that her husband was snitty because the heating engineer she dealt with left a valve open, and she cooked potatoes, the responses wouldn’t be similar.

That’s standard MN though.
Imagine being annoyed that your husband cooked you dinner AND had the audacity not to check the heating engineer (who is fully qualified, and DH is not) had shut or opened all of the correct valves.

This place is hilarious 😅

I always book a boiler service in Summer so that if anything is wrong /dangerous/ needs a part to be ordered it won't matter because we are not going to be inconvenienced if it has to be off while it's fixed. Last year it was on one of the 40° days . I felt so sorry for the engineer going up into the loft which was sweltering and then he asked me to put the heating on full blast to test whatever function. I can quite imagine not realising when its already a boiling hot day.

flutterby1 · 05/09/2023 22:01

I agree, it's definitely a salad day .., or as you say quick meal on the hob. Hot days are not for oven cooking !

ManchesterLu · 05/09/2023 22:22

I don't understand for the life of me why it's a problem that he cooked roast potatoes in the oven.

The heating would annoy me too for sure, but it's not like he did it on purpose, the engineer left it on and he didn't notice. It's easy to do in this weather - you already know it's supposed to be boiling, so a bit of extra heat might not be noticed.

WandaWonder · 05/09/2023 22:38

Sure heating is odd but I must have missed the no oven rule as we want what we want regardless of weather as long as I don't have to cook I am happy with whatever
