It's Charlie Bigham's

Not Charlie Bingham's. Love it or loathe it, please note there's no N.

Don't mind me - was expecting Chinese when dh went out to get it. He's stopped off at the pub with friends. No Chinese - we live very remotely so takeaway is a very rare treat - but he got Charlie BiNgham meatballs instead.

Lighthearted - just glad I'm not cooking after my first day back with the children after summer (teacher). Though I am wondering what time dinner will be as DH and dinner are still at the pub!

Charlie BigNose / BigFoot etc in our house. The chilli con carne is rank, but I like some of the others

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 06/09/2023 00:24

We call it Charlie Big Potatoes - which is the direct English equivalent of Charlemagne (kind of)!

TimeFlysWhenYoureHavingRum · 06/09/2023 00:31

They are ready meals. No more no less.

CallieQ · 06/09/2023 00:33

CB meals are very overpriced

CallieQ · 06/09/2023 00:34

Fish pie is nice

CallieQ · 06/09/2023 00:35

You are meant to knit your own dinners from homegrown alfalfa sprouts.

😂

DH had the M&S gastropub lamb moussaka last week and the Charlie bighams (?) version this week. The m&s was better value for the size but otherwise said he would happily eat either. I had the M&S best ever lasagne and the Charlie bighams this week. M&S one is far superior, flavour, consistency, appearance, everything. Would not eat the other one again.

TawnyLarue · 06/09/2023 01:07

I’d have divorced him for less.

TawnyLarue · 06/09/2023 01:07

Lidl lasagne is meant to be the best one.

Although it’s probably horse.

Frances0911 · 06/09/2023 01:12

FWIW, it's actually pronounced Byam, as the g is silent.

The Spanish chicken is really good, but I'll only buy it if it's in the reduced section at my local Waitrose, which it rarely is, as otherwise way too expensive.

Source? Grin

I read an article about them being the closest to real food in terms of ready meals as they do not use artificial ingredients, hence the cost. However, on the down side highly calorific.

comedownwithme · 06/09/2023 09:10

We just call them 'Charlie's' which eliminates any error of surname

OP of all the meals i have tried the meatballs turned out to be the only one I wouldn't buy again. I really didn't like it.

Oh and the steak pie was the best until they started putting mushrooms in it 😩

viques · 06/09/2023 09:13

I find those “ooh aren’t we an environmentally aware and caring company” containers a pain. They always seem to singe in my oven and smell a bit like burnt paper. I like the fish pie though I only buy it if I see it on the reduced shelf.

Yes, this. As long as they aren't black (their processing cameras need a level of transparency to identify waste), we can rinse and put out plastic food trays for recycling. Wood just goes straight into landfill. Bit of an own-goal there?

Throwaway23X · 06/09/2023 09:52

If I was expecting a Chinese, looking forward to the Chinese and did not get the Chinese, I would be sending him back out.

Lyricallie · 06/09/2023 09:57

Oh I love the chicken tikka one. Only ever buy it if it’s on offer or reduced. I much prefer it to a Chinese (but the Chinese where I live is a bit blah).

Twentytwo22 · 06/09/2023 10:01

Me and DH like them. We love the fish pie, tikka masala and tarka dahl. We only get them when on clubcard though as they are expensive.

MrsClatterbuck · 06/09/2023 10:06

Love the fish pie. Once got two of the large reduced to £4.50 each in Sainsburys. Home and into the freezer. Refuse to pay the 9.50 after price increase. Our Sainsburys doesn't have a fantastic range tbh. Not sure if their chicken pie could beat Mark's gastro chicken bacon andeek pie

KimberleyClark · 06/09/2023 10:09

The beef bourguignon and potato dauphinoise is gorgeous. But has to be a rare treat.

Goldenbear · 06/09/2023 10:09

We can't put plastic trays, yoghurts pots etc in recycling, this is in Brighton so a bit odd considering our Green MP but in that regard the wood in the landfill is better than the plastic.

Little known fact is that Charlie Bs ancestor was an absentee landlord to one of the worst effected parishes during the Irish famine and then presided over a massive emigration scheme in the same parish as didn’t want to support the local poor house. Production of overpriced ready meals in the uk today feels slightly ironic 🤔

Bluevelvetsofa · 06/09/2023 10:18

Aldi lasagne is way better than Charlie B imo. Apart from being about a third of the price.

They’ve got shedloads of calories, more than a Macdonalds, some of them!

The cauliflower macaroni cheese was reduced in Waitrose the other day and I thought, “Ooh, I’ll have that…” - 40g of fat in HALF a pack!! 😳 I don’t want half a pack either; I want to eat the whole thing!

I hope it’s not going to be necessary to research our ancestry before deciding how to earn a living.
We love the CB meals; better quality and taste than most, especially the Fish Pie.
