Had a hysterectomy years ago with removal of cervix. GP has sent an invitation to have a smear.

Not a medical expert but if you have had a total hysterectomy then I wouldn't think you'd need screening.

Contact your surgery as the records may not have been updated.

As above. They can then code your notes so you won’t get invited again

Thanks unfortunately very hard to get in contact. I have the letters from the consultant that said I had a hysterectomy and a lab report about the cervix but now worried.

The same happened to me. I got letters constantly for about 3 years following my hysterectomy. I spoke to a doctor eventually and never got called again. It's nothing to worry about

Thank you. Did any of your letters say no more smears needed?

It's just an automated letter. They just haven't removed your name from the list of people to invite. Nothing to worry about. I had the same happen after my hysterectomy. You could probably email if it's hard to get through on the phone.

Kangarude · 05/09/2023 16:54

The doctor told me that. I wouldn't need smears as I didn't have a cervix.

HereLiesBetelgeuse · 05/09/2023 16:55

If no cervix you don't need a smear. The notes are usually updated to say this but maybe the marker has been lost with a change of system or something if it's been a while.

It's nothing to worry about, just contact your GP surgery and ask them to remove you from the smear list as per your past notes.

Findyourneutralspace · 05/09/2023 16:55

This happened to a friend of mine. She turned up fully expecting a smear and was told she didn’t need it as she had no cervix

cptartapp · 05/09/2023 16:55

You may need a vault smear. Have a Google.
Contact your GP if you think this applies to you. They're not done in general practice though.

I had a full hysterectomy, and my surgeon advised that I'd need a gynaecologist appointment in five years.

hedgehoglurker · 05/09/2023 17:04

My hysterectomy was to remove my cervix due to repeated colposcopies, CIN 3, etc.

I was told that "vault" smears might still be necessary if the whole area at risk wasn't successfully removed. However, the lab report confirmed to my consultant that I wouldn't require any more smears and I've not been called for one since.

TangerineDuvet · 05/09/2023 17:13

I had a hysterectomy for heavy periods. Lab report about removed cervix said no significant abnormalities.
