Yesterday it was school's falling to bits. That's been going on in minute detail for days. Switched on the BBC news. New doomsday scenario sewage in the rivers in great detail. STFU. Switched off.

hysterically

Really?

yep. loud, shouty commentators who become hysterical when someone scores a goal. And the assumption is that we are equally hyped up. Fine on sports programmes, not on the news.

@verdantverdure those suggestions won't go down well with the OP. 😁

I suspect not.

I suspect some people who voted for the governments and the Brexit that have brought our country to this low point do suffer discomfort at witnessing the consequences of those actions on the nightly news.

Vote to rejoin the EU.

Is there a parallel GE running where rejoin EU is an option?

Bluevelvetsofa · 06/09/2023 11:34

All you need is to catch a glimpse of the headlines. You don’t need to sit through the whole thing to know the basics.

If you live in Scotland that might well be a possibility.......

That's what the "when you get the chance" part was about.

I don't know when the next EU referendum will be but I know we have to have one.

Actually I think it’s great people are questioning the negativity and methods the media use for news

Inflation going down is news, so are scientific breakthroughs for say diagnosing breast cancer, it’s not all bad

However Covid was pretty good for the media in that it learned just how much they could impact people with headlines

I’d say it’s good to think about why something is phrased a certain way and what emotional reaction it prompts. Why some numbers are used and what’s the context.

Think about whether you’d prefer to hear that information without those prompts

Because people are working hard to deliver it in a way that keeps your attention and makes you feel a certain way

There are many platforms vying for attention, there’s every good reason to understand why some keep you more hooked and whether that is a good thing for you.

I didn’t watch it but some found a recent programme on Netflix on methods used useful

Absolutely agree with this. A lot of things can be exaggerated by different news platforms and many people just read the headline / clickbait and make a snap judgement based only on that without reading the article and if they already feel a certain way or have a bias, it only adds to it.

RantyAnty · 06/09/2023 15:42

Why watch it?

I spends about 30 minutes a week catching up on it. That's it.

Highandlows · 06/09/2023 16:22

Yes, agree news are mostly dreadful.

Btw Labour run Birmingham council went bankrupt. Who would have thought that one coming?

Edited

There was a list of about 30 councils considered in danger of bankruptcy and as far as I recall all the councils that have issued a section 114 like Birmingham, (Croydon, Woking, Northamptonshire, Slough, Thurrock etc) were all on it.

26 councils are still on it including Conservative controlled Hampshire.
