Disney movies help!

Rainraindontgoawa · 04/09/2023 20:40

We have a 3.5 year old who although knows Elsa very well hasn’t seen the movie! Although she knows little mermaid very well she hasn’t seen the movie… etc.

This is because all these movies are not appropriate for this age group because they are too fast, contain violent/scary scenes scary creatures etc. In any case are not appropriate for a 3-4 year old.

For this reason we are focusing on Bluey, cocomelon etc.

Any suggestion on Disney movies for this age group? We are stuck in a holiday with bad weather and we need some advice!

YABU - Go with Elsa!

YANBU - Go with Winnie the Pooh!

My nearly 6 year old has already declared Elsa too babyish. Mine have watched these films since age 3 and they are fine.

Ha, maybe my kids are psychopaths but they’ve taken ‘oh no the parents have died’ pretty resolutely 😂

Mines clearly also a psychopath I don't even think he battered an eye at Elsa's parents dying and not even a hint of distress at Mufasa's demise. Little weirdo didn't even cry at the start of UP whilst I was crying just from the music in the kitchen.

UniKnow · 04/09/2023 21:31

I’m 4 yo doesn’t like The Little Mermaid (‘too scary’) but loves Frozen, Encanto, Moana, Rapunzel etc. Live dangerously and give them a go.

HermioneWeasley · 04/09/2023 21:33

When my DD was 3 she loved Jurassic Park and cried when the T Tex wasn’t on screen. She’s always loved an apex predator.

DCINightingale · 04/09/2023 21:34

Cars is a great one, 2.5 yo DD loves it, She loves original Dumbo too.

Gymmum82 · 04/09/2023 21:36

Dd had watched every Disney princess film by that age. She’s not scarred by them. I think you’re overthinking how much they actually take in

Gymmum82 · 04/09/2023 21:37

Also those suggesting Dumbo. I was utterly traumatised by that as a child. I can’t watch it as an adult. I’d take any scary Disney princess movie over Dumbo

BettyBoopy · 04/09/2023 21:38

101 Dalmatian's?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 04/09/2023 21:41

Toy Story is a good one with no violence/parental death etc and cracking music

But tbh mine watched frozen etc at 3 and were fine.

Finding Nemo has a millisecond of "action" at the start then becomes a lovely colourful adventure so that's a good shout.

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 04/09/2023 21:41

Ok so I've got this idea right. Little lion cub navigating the plains and he's gone be king of the animal kingdom one day

Disney boss: KILL THE DAD

In all seriousness though... my DD adores all the different tinkerbelle films at that age. We had them all on DVD (she's 14 now) but I'm sure you could stream them.

Crimblecrumble1990 · 04/09/2023 21:44

My 3.5 year old is quite sensitive. He likes encanto but the Bruno song can be a bit scary so we fast forward that. He also likes Moana but was terrified of the big fiery monster that turns in to the green lady island.

We've just watched Boss Baby which he found ok. He prefers watching clips of the films/music soundtrack videos on YouTube rather than the whole film.

Calmestofallthechickens · 04/09/2023 21:46

My daughter loves the lion king, and she often pretends, or asks me to pretend, to be Mufasa lying dead on the floor 😱 and sometimes my kids play ‘lion fight’ which basically involves them circling around and then wrestling.

I also let her watch pui pui molcar on Netflix so that’s sort of the standard of parental tv filter I’ve got going on…

Cars
Luca
Toy Story
Aristocats
Fox and Hound 2 (not fox and hound 1!!! Which is dark. But fox and hound 2 is about them forming a barbershop quartet or something)
The lion guard
The Mickey/Minnie mouse juniors shorts are very inoffensive but super annoying as an adult

bryceQ · 04/09/2023 21:55

Moana
Zootropolis
Both fab

The frozen Christmas mini is really sweet

Then what about Julia Donaldson ones on prime - gruffalo, room on the broom, snail and the whale, highway rat. Also a snowy day is a lovely story. And Percy the Park keeper is super sweet

Tiespin · 04/09/2023 21:58

Stick man

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 04/09/2023 21:59

Ice Age is good. Lots of slapstick.

HowcanIhelp123 · 04/09/2023 22:04

Unless particularly sensitive kids tend not to find things as scary as adults. I remember seeing The Black Cauldron as a child and no issues, saw it again as an adult and dear god that film is terrifying for a disney film! Never understood that back then. Most disney films will be absolutely fine.

Needmorelego · 04/09/2023 22:06

@Calmestofallthechickens wait wait wait..... there's a Fox and the Hound 2 😲
When did that happen?
Loved Fox and the Hound when I was 6 (had the book, sticker album etc). Have never re watched it as an adult though because I think my illusion of it being brilliant will be shattered 😂

Blessedbethefruitz · 04/09/2023 22:19

V sensitive 4.5 year old here. Frozen 2 lacks the 'scary' marshmallow abominable snowman of the first movie. More funny parts too. Encanto lacks anything scary - great songs too. Surprisingly unfazed by the demon at the start of moana, but dead dad in lion king and scary lion cave in aladin were too much... Prompted conversations about when elsa's parents are returning too 😬

This child also doesn't watch cars because of when lightning mqueen loses his 'mama' transport truck at the start - not sure what happens as this is as far through as I've ever watched too!

He doesn't enjoy or 'get' winnie the pooh though we have books. Pocoyo is excellent, although not a movie. Great for interpersonal relations without annoying voices. Quite endearing tbh. Octonauts is also good (and educational), although annoying voices and octo alerts in their dreams if they get attached...

LassoOfTruth · 04/09/2023 22:20

My kids must be psychos because they don’t mind at all about dead lion dads/parents etc. My fave is Coco but I cry every single time and my 5 year old makes fun of me 😂
The older Disney’s - Bambi, Robin Hood etc are pretty mild. My 3 year old who’s way more sensitive than his sister loves the Ice Age shorts, and all the Julia Donaldson animations already mentioned. They’re fab and much less frenetic and shouty.

Blessedbethefruitz · 04/09/2023 22:20

Snail and the whale is entrancing and lovely here too (book or show). Stick man is concerning (apparently) due to loss of stick dad...

gawditswindy · 04/09/2023 22:33

Whitewolf2 · 04/09/2023 21:20

Cinderella could be a good starter one? Or maybe Jungle Book or Tangled.

My daughter was TERRIFIED by the hair cutting scene in Tangled. Wouldn't watch it for years.

Calmestofallthechickens · 04/09/2023 22:51

Tangled was an absolute nightmare. My daughter would ask me to pretend to be ‘Muvva Goffel’ and then ask me if I stole her from her parents. It’s quite sinister in the film and even more sinister re enacted by a three year old!

GrimGrinningGhosts · 04/09/2023 23:04

Coco broke me, but in my defence it wasn’t long after my mum had died suddenly and it was all a bit raw.
I loved Luca, such an underrated movie.
My kids are both adults and I’ll still stick a Disney movie on from time to time, can’t beat a good sing along to frozen when you’re ironing 😂

GrimGrinningGhosts · 04/09/2023 23:06

Oh and if you ask DD she’ll tell of the day I traumatised her for life with ‘the good dinosaur’. She was about 14 at the time, but that one scene, and you’ll know which one I refer to if you’ve seen it, left her slack jawed in horror whilst I howled with laughter.
