Cleaners throwing food away

I have two cleaners who come for two hours (so four hours in total) every fortnight. They’re fantastic, clean everywhere, Hoover, mop, dust, all bathrooms, clean the oven and fridge etc, they really are amazing and my one treat. I’ve noticed sometimes when I come home that some foods are missing, I’ve always dismissed it before, but haven’t done the big shop this week, so only have a few bits in for a few days. I had some salad in a bag, which they must have thrown out, it didn’t look great, but I only got it yesterday and the sell by is not for a few days yet. I used some last night for dinner but was going to do salads for the next couple of days. I had a bowl of strawberries and a few grapes, yes, almost on their way out, but still useable and I was going to do pancakes for Dd for breakfast tomorrow and use up the rest (there was quite a lot left) The strangest thing though is I got a whole new garlic clove and it’s just gone 🤷🏻‍♀️Couldn’t have been mistaken for going bad. They cleaned the fridge and I assume threw these things away…it’s really annoying though, is this a normal cleaner thing to do? I’ve looked in the cupboards to see if the garlic is there instead, it’s not. It sounds such a small thing, but after an expensive summer holiday I’d got what I needed until the end of the week more or less and also I don’t throw food away unless needed, I’d literally bought the salad the day before

Just message them and ask them not to throw away any food in the future - you'll take care of that, and do they recall seeing a garlic bulb?

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 04/09/2023 18:13

Maybe thrown, maybe not. I would just say leave the food binning to you in future.

Bonbon21 · 04/09/2023 18:13

You leave a BIG notice inside the fridge telling them not to dispose of any food when they are cleaning the fridge.

I’ve had several cleaners and none of them clean inside fridges, cupboards etc.
as pps have said, ask them to not throw anything away.
if they have a query for example see something that they deem to be really mouldy ask them to put it in a separate bag for you to deal with.

edited to change the word mildly to mouldy

Tell them ?

Malapataraso · 04/09/2023 18:16

We have no evidence that the food is missing because it’s being tossed. Maybe they are eating it or taking it home, we don’t know.

@Nomorecoconutboosts They don’t do inside cupboards, would if I asked I think. I ask them to please do the fridge sometimes. I’m wary to bring it up as they’re so good and don’t want to lose them!

@Malapataraso A whole garlic clove though and half a bag of salad? The strawberries were in a bowl so I don’t know how they’d do that. Also, the fridge wasn’t fully stocked so it would be noticeable if things went, as it has been to me 🥺

I would text "thanks for cleaning the fridge.. I can't find some salad and strawberries I had in the fridge I am just checking as I think you might have thrown them out?"

and then when they say they have

"Oops no worries - maybe going forward would it be OK please if you leave food you think needs throwing out on the top shelf and I will just double check."

Don't be daft. Just tell them not to throw any contents of the fridge away please. It's not a big deal.
