Smell gas on the street

I can smell gas strongly on our street. I smelled it as soon as I pulled up on the driveway an hour ago, I’d been at my parents for tea

DH working a night shift.

Parents only live 2 miles away and they’ve said pack a bag for us all including DH and go and stay there for the night.

4 of my neighbours can also smell it, it’s not coming from inside the house but is a strong smell outside. Rang the emergency gas helpline and an engineer is here now but he has just said ‘it smells like gas, but I don’t think it is gas, but I’ll do some checks anyway’

WWYD? I would usually worry less but I left one of the windows on latch upstairs so the smell has probably got in.

I'd speak to the professional on site and listen to him.

Sorry x post

Surely they have a meter. It measures if it’s gas and how much.

Already done this and spoken to them, they’re here now.

The engineer will quickly be able to tell if its gas or not. Even if it is the small amount that may have entered your home through the window will not be a problem. If you need to leave the house he will tell you.

I'd speak to the professional on site and listen to him.

He thinks it smells strongly of gas but might not be gas, whatever that means! It’s an outside smell not an inside smell.

I get mega paranoid about this. Whilst I'd want to listen to a professional, he doesn't sound too helpful..?!
And I'd also be full of what ifs. You should go with your immediate gut instinct.
I would stay away for the night. To be on the safe side

Exactly what I’m thinking, he sounds unsure to be honest and there’s only one of him vs now 5 of us from different households who think we can genuinely smell gas, and strongly!

We had this a few years ago one evening, returned home to the stench of gas outside on the street. When the gas emergency engineer arrived he did quite a few checks in and around our house and the rest of the street. He told us it wasn't a leak but likely a pocket of air had trapped it due to the weight of the gas vs the normal air and the weather at the time helped it keep together rather than dissipate as it usually does. The smell went away within a couple of hours and we've not smelt it since!

KajsaKavat · 03/09/2023 23:13

I’ve had this twice, once there was a leak on the pavement outside our house, they came out straight away and took samples etc, it was turned off and the. Fixed fully a few days later.

the other time was a neighbour in the flat below us moved out and left the gas on, that was freaking scary,

heyitsthistle · 03/09/2023 23:21

Can you report it to your gas provider, even if it's coming from an unknown source?

Ah, didn't read the full OP evidently.

BeverlyBrook · 03/09/2023 23:24

Phone to report it, you need the postcode and address for them to find the location to check it out. Definitely phone

We had this and it turned out my neighbour had left one of her gas hobs on.

It made me think I'd never buy want to buy a gas cooker/hob without the glass lid that auto shuts off the gas when you put it down, I don't even think they should sell them without it; it would be so easy to knock one on a bit and not notice.

Gothambutnotahamster · 03/09/2023 23:41

Are you in the UK? Did you call 0800 111 999? If so, The gas engineer will have a gascoseeker & will do a full & thorough sweep of the area. They'll be able to definitively tell you if its gas or not. If it is, then they'll also know what steps yo take to make it safe.
