To go away on my own? If not, where shall I go?

I’m a teacher in a private school. My children go to a different school. This usually means, that every time they are on holiday, so am I. So while I love them to bits, I never get a day to myself, because they are off when I am, I’, at school when they are.
Next Easter, for some reason, there’s an overlap and for the first time, I have a week off when they are still at school (they go back a week after me).
Over the summer I have been feeling a bit like I need a bit space, nothing permanent, just a break to look forward to and I feel like this could be it.
So, my question is , AIBU to want to go away for 2/3 days on my own, somewhere they wouldn’t want to go anyway?
If I’m not BU, I have 3 choices.

A) Go and stay with my brother and his wife in Brighton. I like Brighton and there’s lots to do, but I’ve been a lot, plus my SIL works from home so I would feel I have to go out all day, and the kids would have to share a room etc.

B) Go somewhere like London and just wander around without anyone nagging they were bored, tired or wanted to go home. I lived and worked in London for a long time so it’s not new but then there is always something new to do and see. I’ve never been to the National Gallery, for example, or Tate Modern (well, I have been to the Tate Modern but only to use the loo).

C) Be really brave and just go somewhere completely random. Stick a pin in a map, or just get on the next standby flight. But that seems a bit excessive.

I could really only justify probably 2 nights, 3 absolute tops. And my budget is realistically about £500 (but it’s the week before most schools break up so won’t be as stupidly expensive as the week after. And I live in the South East.

So, WWYD?

Go to Berlin. An amazing place.

  1. see if anywhere cheap and go for it. Maybe Dubrovnik, Spain, France.
MuggleMe · 03/09/2023 23:08

I'd totally go abroad in your position. Have a browse for some interesting cities and go!

tinkrbell · 03/09/2023 23:09

I love a solo holiday. Maybe a city break abroad. Berlin or Barcelona? All short flight times and should be doable on your budget.

SkaneTos · 03/09/2023 23:11

Option C, but does it have to be random? Where would you like to travel to?

Hopskiplou · 03/09/2023 23:11

C C C! Change is as good as a rest OP. Anywhere you’ve always wanted to go (within reason/budget)?

Ratfinkstinkypink · 03/09/2023 23:13

Solo holidays are ace, I would opt for 3.

nadine90 · 03/09/2023 23:16

Oh I would love this! Definitely go and see a new city, there’s so much world out there!

Potentially due to budget and duration (flight availability etc).

I'd go to Rome. In fact I did. I went for two days, first time away without the kids since they were born, and eldest is 13.
It was amazing. I just wandered all day. No one to answer to, did whatever I wanted. Fantastic.
But any city you can wander around would be great. Look for the cheapest flights, early out and late back. Get somewhere nice and central to stay so you can go out on the evening without worrying about walking too far on your own

MomOfTwoGirls2 · 03/09/2023 23:29

Check cheap flights from your closest airport on the days that work for you!
but a few days in London is always great!

I understand. Do you have somewhere somewhat close by that you would like to visit?

(For example, the trip of my dreams would be to Alaska, but I don't have the time or the money for that right now. BUT, there is a specific city in Germany that I would like to visit, and that is much more realistic. Can you think along the same lines?)

I go to London on my own as often as I can, mainly just for the day or overnight, (from Glasgow), but I went for a week in July and loved it, had an amazing time.
I'd go further but can't afford it, though did when I was younger and could.
Don't let being solo stop you.
I'm off to Skye later this month, and Manchester next month, back to London in November.
Go!

Barcelona for 48 hours: early flight, check in to hotel, pick up city bus south route to get bearings and sit on top deck, stop off at Boqueria for lunch in the market, fresh seafood grilled in front of you, quick stop off at cathedral, walk the streets in the Hothic quarter, back to hotel for nap, then tapas for one. Day 2 - maybe 2nd city bus route north, stop off in the lovely residential and arty bits, maybe back down south to the beach, drink on the terrace at the W. So much to see, easy to get to, very welcoming

LilyLemonade · 03/09/2023 23:44

Sounds like a terrific idea. B (London) or C (another city in the UK) for me I think - I wouldn't want to travel further afield for such a short break. Glasgow, York, Bath, Norwich are ones which appeal to me.

redshoeswhiteshoes · 03/09/2023 23:58

Go to prague, I've been before and it's lovely. It's not expensive once you get there and you get to learn so much about the city's history.

weirdoboelady · 04/09/2023 00:05

Solo hols are great BUT there are really crippling singles supplements. How would you feel about a camping holiday? Buy a cheap lightweight tent and go to a campsite somewhere warm? Campsites are generally great, friendly places and you could sightsee to your heart's content!

ahagwearsapointybonnet · 04/09/2023 00:12

C definitely! How about York or Edinburgh, I've had great weekends away on my own in both, there's loads to explore? Or Eurostar to Paris if you're in the SE? You can reduce the effect of single supplements a bit by going for Airbnb or looking for hotels/B&Bs that have a single room.

herbygarden · 04/09/2023 00:33

C) 100%

LumpyandBumps · 04/09/2023 10:17

I would say most definitely C.
I went by myself to Dunoon by plane, train and ferry, and loved it. Stunning scenery.
I also went to Bratislava and Vienna. They are quite a short train journey apart.
Really though any city will
provide plenty for you to do. I would probably book a studio or apartment in case I wanted to chill out in comfort late at night or early morning.
I hope you have a great time.
