To find this unacceptable in front of a child?

I'm sitting on a bench reading. Family comes along mum dad and son 10 or 11 and sit down eating ice cream. A wasp starts buzzing around and the dad shouts "F-ing bastard. F-ing cu next Tuesday". It gets on his cornet and he drops it, swears again, puts it in the bin and kicks hell out of the bin. Then storms off and sits on a wall across the road. Mum and son laugh about him and take the Mickey. I felt quite disturbed sitting near them.

It's not ideal, but plenty of people do it. The kicking of the bin was ridiculous, but otherwise I can't see anything to get worked up over. I certainly wouldn't have felt "quite disturbed", more likely I would have laughed.

Lullaby1973 · 04/09/2023 14:49

Tbh I find that it's the kids who's parents who don't swear, are the ones with the potty mouths. Not the ones that have parents with colourful vocabularies

Purplerain0505 · 03/09/2023 17:52

I don’t think swearing in front of kids is an issue and I wouldn’t bat an eyelid at that. No need to kick the shit out of the bin though, it’s a bit of an overreaction.

agree language is just language. Active violence is totally on another level

andrainwillmaketheflowersgrow · 04/09/2023 14:53

The swearing wouldn't bother me, but the violence is a whole different thing.

You know how that child is going to grow up and be like...

What? What is he going to grow up to be like? A man who doesn't like wasps? Someone who swears? What?!

AppleTurnover1000Degrees · 04/09/2023 15:16

Wasps are fucking cunts.

SparkyBlue · 04/09/2023 15:26

I couldn't get worked over this but I'd be annoyed at him kicking the bin. The language wouldn't bother me

SallyWD · 04/09/2023 15:29

Yes it's not acceptable but also not at all surprising. There are thousands of people like this around.

readbooksdrinktea · 04/09/2023 15:36

Wasps are indeed fucking cunts, and especially this year they're being complete arseholes. Maybe he really wanted that ice cream.

GP78 · 04/09/2023 15:37

YANBU but I have to admit to shouting 'oh shit' in front of the kids the other day when I tried to drive an automatic car like a manual and stalled it 🤦‍♂️

MontblancTheSecond · 04/09/2023 15:37

Can’t believe what I read, PP condoning vandalism?! Absolute unacceptable behaviour (and really unhelpful when dealing with wasps, blowing in their direction is more effective).

LizzieW1969 · 04/09/2023 15:38

Prescottdanni123 · 03/09/2023 18:38

Not great language in front of child but I can sympathise as I am terrified with wasps and have called them some choice names in the past as well.

Same here. I’ve been known to flap around like an idiot when a wasp has disrupted a picnic, so I can’t really criticise him too much. (Although I scream rather than swear. 🤣)

In my defence, I did react very badly to a sting a few years ago.

OnAMidnightTrainToGeorgia · 04/09/2023 15:41

Looks like Yabu then op!

Who's condoning vandalism?

If my DH had kicked the shit out of a bin over a wasp I'd LTB as I'd definitely get the ick and would never want to sleep with him again.

However, I'm terrible for swearing when I drive.

MariaVT65 · 04/09/2023 15:53

He shouldn’t have kicked the bin, no need to encourage any kind of violence or taking anger out physically.

I wouldn’t care about the swearing massively. Not like kids that age won’t already know those words. I don’t care about swearing in general tbh

RoyalGala · 04/09/2023 16:13

With so many, (I assume) parents are happy for parents to swear profusely in-front of children, I’m not surprised why society is the way it is and kids have little respect. I remember a time when swearing was frowned upon, it seems not anymore and standards have really dropped.

Cowlover89 · 04/09/2023 16:15

Wasps are bastards

RoyalGala · 04/09/2023 16:17

And to answer the OP, yes he was unreasonable, I would have been mortified if that was my husband. Wasps can be annoying but they’re an important part of the eco-system, they just happen to like sweet things so will naturally fly that way.

WetBandits · 04/09/2023 16:20

I got stung by a wasp last week and it fucking hurts, my friend’s DS was next to me at the time and I will admit I swore quite loudly and colourfully in pain and shock!

His little face when he tapped me on the arm and asked if I was okay 🥺

Ponoka7 · 04/09/2023 16:21

It's the bin kicking that I have issue with. The rest is fine and the fact that they can laugh at him, shows he isn't violent to them. It would be better if he gave a better example of controlling his temper, but removing himself was the next best thing.

CharlotteBog · 04/09/2023 16:24

The aggression is really horrible. The swearing also isn't nice in this context.

That said, me and my son have football season tickets and there is some very ripe language in the stands. He's 14 so that ship has sailed for him (I don't mean he's a habitual swearer, but he's not learning new words!), but there are much younger kids in the stands. It's (mostly!) good natured and I think kids would miss out on a lot if being exposed to swearing meant the weren't taken to matches.

I would not want my children to grow up around someone kicking a bin and very poorly managing to deal with a small inconvience/upset.

Tessabelle74 · 04/09/2023 16:32

Livelovebehappy · 03/09/2023 18:43

Because your child will mimic what you do as a parent. And hearing a 5 year old use the word ‘fucking’ in every day language is absolutely awful and disturbing. That’s why….

It's just words. Imagine with everything going on in the world that swearing still gives people the vapours. Pathetic quite frankly

usernother · 04/09/2023 16:33

I hate people like him. Really.

Katmai · 04/09/2023 16:35

Unacceptable behaviour in public full stop. Not that I like wasps any more than the next person.
