Italy tour ..we don't have enough cash?

Afternoon!

I have been reading alot of holiday threads here recently which has prompted my own dilemma

Me and friend booked a very cheap Italy tour for 9 days 8 nights leaving next week. It's staying in 4 different Italian cities in basic B and B accommodation, local taxes and breakfast not included. B and B are all outside main towns we are visiting so an hour's travel.

We also have to pay for transport from airport each way , tour is self guided and just includes flights, coach transfers between 4 different cities and B and B

My friend is taking 200 euros and says she won't spend more, I'm getting worried this won't be enough, we also have to pay B and B local taxes etc

AIBU to tell her we both will need more cash , or has anyone been to Italy and found it cheap?!

No fit flops not flip flops !!!
Really comfy and padded sole so great for walking !

My misreading, sorry. Although I managed to sprain an ankle in Fitflops(toepost Lulu) in Verona a few years back!

Thanks, I’m loving it so far!

Take what you want and suggest it might be an idea to take the credit card just in case. Have a great time, I love Italy.

I love this post. When I went on my first solo holiday, my dad advised I take a budget of £10 per day. I did, and brought a little back

How many years ago was that though?

The first time I went to Italy (1985) I had the backpackers’ bible “Rough Guide to Italy” for cheap places to stay and eat.
One of the places we stayed was in a GREAT “affittacamere” near Piazza Navona, Rome so I decided to take the family to stay there in summer 2019.
The place was untouched, i.e. basic, but the prices!

From backpacker to just about affordable for a 2-worker family.
Budget travel is really hard now unless you’re willing to stay in youth hostels and eat standing up.

Well it is more that living standards (and costs) have risen massively in some southern european countries in the last 40 years or so.

Reading your posts is giving me palpitations. You’re going to some of the most beautiful cities on the planet and you’ve done sod all research. You’re also going at a super hot time of year so it will be crowded as anything. And the queues for some of the more popular places will be insane. You’re also wasting a great deal of time on travel to and from the main areas.

Holidays like the one you’ve booked are cheap for a reason.

I don't think October will be 'super hot'. I think it's actually a good time to visit Italy as the weather will still be pleasant and the crowds will be much less than in summer. However, there's not really such a thing as 'low' season in cities like Rome or Venice.

I agree with the rest of your post though. The poster seems to have done next to no research. And yes, you get what you pay for. She'll likely be staying in the Ryanair version of hotels. Supposedly 'in' Milan but actually a long bus journey outside. I get that lots of people can't afford to spend more on travel but unfortunately Italy is an expensive country and you're going to have to spend money if you want to make the most of your time there.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 05/09/2023 14:45

It’s not ‘super hot’ in Como right now. T-shirt weather, but comfortable.

September is a perfect time to go to Italy. Still nice and warm but not as baking as August.

SatsumaNightmare · 06/09/2023 13:11

Think we have different definitions of crowd levels and heat! (That’s not me knocking you). I tend to go in January and it’s amazing - low wait times, quiet, nice temperatures, cheaper.

How was your holiday LaDolceVitafor200?

LIZS · 23/09/2023 08:42

Just got back from Italy and it felt way more expensive than during our last visit in 2019 and very busy. Meal for two 70e minimum. Topped warm foccacia is a good takeaway lunch, around 5e a slice. Ice cream 2,50-3,50e for a small cup. Previously free museums may now charge and require a timed entry ticket so book ahead.

EmpressaurusOfCats · 23/09/2023 12:45

One minor pleasure for me was the way that a 6 euro glass of wine in the evening always came with a tray of snacks attached, so that was tea covered.

Callyem · 23/09/2023 13:00

I'd say being thrifty, £500 each would be ok. You could probs manage with a little less but £200 defo not!

@LaDolceVitafor200 Any update on how your trip was OP?
