Bought something online, didn't fit. Took it into store to try and change it, they didn't have the size needed in store. To reorder it would have cost me another fiver. Didn't want to do this as it was a low value item. Was told size needed was available in another store so took the credit note I was given and went to the other shop. They charged me more for the exact same item!! I asked why, was told that in the 10 days I'd placed the order the price had gone up. I explained that it doesn't work like that, as it was a straight exchange and within 29 days, proof of purchase and original packaging was all there, the price had to be honoured. Was then told they don't match online prices!! I've never come across this before. Tried to get in touch with customer service which is impossible! Have to go through all the chat bot before being connected to a person who was absolutely no help or cared! It's not about the money, it's not much, it's the fact that they can get away with doing it! I'm stuck now, I either have a credit note to waste or I spend more money elsewhere! Jl

Yes but did you get a massive mug?

No. It was a different transaction. You got a credit note for returning the first item, that was their statutory obligation fulfilled. You wanting to go get the same item in a different size was the start of a new transaction.

It's a pain in the arse, but legally they're covered.

Jemimapinotduck · 31/08/2023 16:07

I work in retail and if I tried to do that to a customer, I'd have customer services on my back and the price would be matched because it's the same item and within the exchange period. If I had bought something for £££ and two weeks later had seen it on offer then I am entitled to the difference back so I can't see how they charge more for the same thing

I think you were quite lucky to get a credit note, SportsDirect don't do refunds in the shop for items bought online, as far as I know.

There's no law that says retailers have to non-faulty exchange items, sell all sizes for the same price, or have the same price online as in the shop.

Zanatdy · 31/08/2023 16:11

I don’t think legally they’ve done anything wrong. It was cheaper, they gave you a credit note to cover that refund and now the sale price has ended so you buy it at the higher price or don’t buy it.

Againstmachine · 31/08/2023 16:14

What your shops policy's are, are irrelevant, what is the law is that matters, you could have sent back the wrong size under distance selling regs. However you went in store, they are were generous offering you the credit.

If you work in retail you would know a shop can price how they like and that, shop bought items unless faulty a shop doesn't even have to refund legally.

SoupDragon · 31/08/2023 16:15

You exchanged the item for a credit note though. You are now buying the item with that credit note.

TokyoSushi · 31/08/2023 16:16

Sports Direct are literally the Ryanair of shops. Great value, but don't expect them to go out of their way in terms of customer service.

OnAMidnightTrainToGeorgia · 31/08/2023 16:17

When I worked in retail we never matched online prices either 🤷‍♀️

Sparklesocks · 31/08/2023 16:18

Yeah they’re notorious for being difficult with exchanges/refunds - I would only buy something I knew definitely fit, or was low cost enough that I could eat the loss if needed. You got the credit note though so they’d probably say they dealt with what you needed.

rwalker · 31/08/2023 16:19

That’s standard practice the first item was returned your credit note was the end of that transaction
your new purchase at the new price was nothing to do with your original transaction

on the other side of the coin it it had gone down in price would you of been insisting you pay more

they have done nothing wrong

The exchange was completed when you got the credit note. You got your money back in the form of a voucher.

What you choose to spend that on is completely up to you. They're under no obligation to honour any prices because it's not an exchange - it's a completely separate transaction.

Scaredycatttt · 31/08/2023 16:57

Pretty much what everyone else had said. What your store does is good customer service but not the law

KrisAkabusi · 31/08/2023 17:00

No! You absolutely are not entitled to that. Some shops may do that to keep a customer, but there is no legal requirement for any business to refund you money just because what you bought before is in a sale now.

Scaryghost · 31/08/2023 17:04

But it wasn’t an exchange, you had a credit note, your refund, end of transaction.

rightherewaiting · 31/08/2023 17:06

Sports direct are so bad when returning anything. They do not do refunds. I don't buy from there anymore
