2 have appeared in my bedroom this evening. I keep seeing them in my house at this time of year. I’m worried as I’ve been online and read they have a painful bite and can cause serious illness in children. Can anybody please give me some tips and how to try and keep them out 😩😩photo for reference. Definitely this species of spider.

I think you're worrying over nothing tbh, as the chances of being bitten are pretty slim compared to how many millions there are and anyway, their venom isn't really that bad.

XenoBitch · 30/08/2023 22:28

No spider is going to approach you or your kids, and bite you. They are more scared of you than you are of them.

Lucieeelu · 30/08/2023 22:29

Thanks. I’m just worried incase they crawl into the bed and in the sheets and then bite when trapped

Spiders don't like the body heat of humans

If you try and get one to walk onto your hand you'll notice they are reluctant so they avoid human skin contact if possible

Evening @Lucieeelu - just to let you know that we've nipped in here and added the sensitive images warning to your picture, so that folk can decide whether they want to click on it or not...

NeverDropYourMooncup · 30/08/2023 22:37

They're more interested in sprinting up walls than getting into bed with children.

Incredibly striking little fellas, though. So fluffy!

Lucieeelu · 30/08/2023 22:43

thanks @LivMumsnet completely forgot to do that!

and thanks everyone, that’s reassuring

Where did you read they can cause serious illness in children OP?

Not doubting you or anything, just can't find a link.

moneyplantnation · 30/08/2023 22:56

@Lucieeelu Spiders have zero interest in humans and have to be handled quite roughly to bite, they are more concerned with escaping you and your children.

To put it into context 0.00075% of the population went to hospital last year from a spider bites and out of the 600+ species of spiders we have in the UK only 3 have a bite that hurts and a handful that are capable of piercing skin.

Honestly I work with spiders a lot, they are more than happy to pretend your not there if you do the same 😄

I've got them as well. I used to be absolutely terrified of spiders, now I have a massive respect for them and I know how terrified they are of us. (I'm still a wee bit scared of them)
Autumn is mating time for spiders, hence the sudden moving around but only until about mid October then they'll be quite dormant again.
If you're really worried put a couple of drops of lavender oil on your pillows at night, they don't like the smell and obviously also good for sleep and stress.

They're just bored with the Is This A Great White Shark In Torquay Harbour? (Answer is always No) feature with tales of what nasty things other sharks have done to idiot humans three thousand miles away.

It's Mouse Spiders this time.

Just think of them as Hinch Spiders with a grey velvet cover on their arse - like a sofa.

Lucieeelu · 30/08/2023 23:10

@WhateverMate ive just looked it up and that information is true of Australian mouse spiders, not the kind found in the UK, so they probably got it mixed up

@moneyplantnation thank you for your reply, that’s very reassuring!

@NeverDropYourMooncup I like that description 😂

@Lucieeelu Good there nothing to be afraid of and let me assure you, your right about that Sun article its completely full of false information.

Ahh yes I guess so.

It wasn't that long ago The Sun had people terrified of False Widow spiders. Honestly, they hyped it out of control.

DyslexicPoster · 30/08/2023 23:54

It's very unlikely to bite you, but it's when you accidentally roll onto then etc. I had a 1.5cm spider in my leggings once. It bit me and was so painful I thought it was a bee so crushed it inside my leggings. Tiny thing, hurt like buggery for at least 12 hours.

You need cellar spiders. I have just had about 200 hatch out in my loo. They eat other spiders
