Swim teacher on holiday- no lesson

Pay by direct debit for a weekly swim lesson for DC.
This week turned away because swim teacher is on holiday?!
I confirmed in person at reception and over the phone that she would definitely have a lesson this week as she had changed groups and class times. Only for her to be turned away and told there is no lesson due to swim teacher being on holiday.

AIBU to think this isn't my problem? I don't employ the swim teacher, it's often a different teacher each week anyway. I pay the centre for a weekly swim lesson and they have not provided that.

YABU everyone needs a holiday

YANBU you don't directly employ the teacher so shouldn't be paying for a week of swimming lessons that can't be done

If they haven’t provided the service you pay for then you should get a refund or a free week.

Their lack of planning isn’t your fault

LlynTegid · 29/08/2023 17:36

If you had been told when you signed up, or even last week, no class, then perhaps fair enough.

Holidays with pay have been law since the 1930s, no excuse.

DinnaeFashYersel · 29/08/2023 17:42

You should be given a refund.

lanthanum · 29/08/2023 17:44

You should be refunded for the cost of the lesson. Given the lack of notice, you might argue for a refund of your travel costs, but I think you'll be lucky.

It depends what the agreement is and who with.
If you pay for a fixed number of lessons per year, spread over a weekly or monthly payment and you will get that lesson at a later date
Or if you pay weekly for that weeks lesson
Or if you are paying a membership fee to a swimming club who provide lessons as a member benefit.

If they told the rest of the class in advance but you missed the communication because of the change.

It's still school holidays here and so most lessons are still off as they are term time only.

You should be given a refund but it's more likely that they will add a credit to your bill and take a bit less next month.

We nearly always have a substitute teacher, but sometimes there are problems at the pool and if they have to cancel they don't give a refund but credit the next bill. I suppose if you really kicked up they might agree a refund.

If our council swimming lesson doesn't take place because of either holiday or sickness, they adjust my direct debit. With obvious exceptions if the lesson fall on either Xmas day or Boxing day.

You should be refunded if the arrangement is that you pay weekly and receive a weekly lesson. Or an extra lesson needs to be offered at the end of the block of lessons.

If it's some other kind of arrangement, which it doesn't sound like because you are paying weekly, then it might be different. Such as paying a monthly amount to receive 40 lessons per year or whatever.
