Pub with a kid

Lou9453 · 29/08/2023 09:10

Am I being unreasonable thinking it’s not right/a red flag to regularly go pub with kids for few hours , and the kid watching their device for the whole time ?
Each day this bank hols weekend they went to a pub for few pints and on some of those days they then had few more cans at home .

When mentioning concerns about the drink it gets brushed off . Any advice or kind words please ?

There are a lot of variables to this which would change my opinion on it, but from just the drinking side, I wouldn't drink that much when I was responsible for a child.

Me too. I used to get really excited about going to the pub, a coke in a glass bottle, some crisps and lots of people fussing over me was a nice time 🤗

Oooh coke in a glass bottle and cheese and onion crisps🤗

I’ve been to a pub for a couple glasses and some food with my sister and her baby. We weren’t drunk and it was quiet so I can’t see anything wrong with it

In what way is that comparable to the op's post? Was the baby on a screen for the whole time? Did you go three days in a row? Did you ignore the baby?

Because I don’t think it matters if the kids were using tablets or they went a couple of times. It’s whether the parent/s are too drunk to look after them or not

SkankingWombat · 29/08/2023 11:04

Agreed that more context is needed.

As a DC, I spent most of EOW in a pub with my F. I was expected to nurse an orange juice and a packet of crisps and be seen and not heard. Obviously screens weren't an option then (well, Gameboys existed, but I didn't have one of those!), and children's play areas weren't a thing. He'd often end up steaming drunk. That was pretty shit parenting.

Our DCs, in comparison, love going to the pub if it's dry and not freezing. To them it is essentially a park with added crisps and drinks (and possibly a portion of chips if they're lucky), as they all have play equipment in their gardens and one even has bouncy castles. DH & I might have a couple of pints over a few hours, but wouldn't be anywhere near 'steaming'.
DC2 specifically requested we go to a beer festival when the first lockdown restrictions started to ease and we asked them what they'd missed the most and wanted to do before we inevitably locked down again. She obviously had no interest in beer, but wanted the music, dancing, swings, Pringles, and Fruit Shoots!

Oooh coke in a glass bottle and cheese and onion crisps🤗

I'd always go for something fancy as it was a treat. A packet of salt n shake or a cheese flavoured moment..I still miss cheese flavoured moments.

Who are you talking about and how old?

We take out LOs to the pub in the day sometimes. Pubs are where our friends socialise. We take ours toys/magazines to play with or choose a pub with a playground in it.

Our friends are great with the kids too and they are generally quite happy.

We give them an iPad or similar if we go out for an evening meal as it's harder to keep them entertained sat down somewhere formal.

Parents deserve some time out and adult conversation too.

I'd also say I'd have a few drinks but not get drunk and let OH have a few more or he will stay out later and I'll bring the kids back for dinner bath bed.

I don’t have an issue with kids going to the pub if there’s a garden or with friends and activities. it’s doing it multiple times in one weekend and often happens for 1 day every weekend . Being sat indoors on a device for several hours , no outdoor play , the same happens at meal times .

is just very contrasting to what I am used as I don’t do it with my child so is a different parenting technique I’m trying to get used to .

Our local has a big beer garden and weekends it’s packed with kids playing while the socialise.
I like it tbh. As long as parents aren’t steaming drunk it’s a nice social hub of the community.

JustAnotherUsey · 29/08/2023 11:39

My kids love going to the pub. We usually go for food. Have found a pub that has a great playground in the beer garden that the kids love. Its lovely on a warm day taking them to that pub and getting to enjoy a drink and food while they had a blast playing with the other kids. Pubs are different these days. During the day it's not a problem taking kids to pubs anymore. It's not all about getting pissed etc.

CurlewKate · 29/08/2023 11:48

Would you be happy with the child on a device for a couple of hours at home? If so, why not the pub?

So are you going to say who it is you're judging? And why it's your business?

8 year old and is a family member .

I mean what you describe isn't going to win the parents any medals, but what do you mean it's a 'red flag'?

Plenty of kids are stuck indoors on screens during the Winter for example, or living with parents who are always on their phones.

If the 8 year old gets fed up of going to the pub, I'm sure the parents will know about it.

You don't need to get used to it because it isn't your child.

Would I personally do this with a child? No. Do I think it's any of my business if other people do that with their child? Also no.

Unless you think the child is being neglected or endangered, this is not your issue to address. You don't get to decide how much screen-time, outdoor play or 'activities' other people's children get.

redrighthand83 · 29/08/2023 12:39

I mean, the prolonged screen would bother me more than the pub. Lots of pubs are geared towards families these days. I feel like I spent my whole summer as a kid in a beer garden, begging for more coke and crisps!

Anoushkaka · 29/08/2023 12:42

My kids are teens now so prefer to stay at home unless there's food involved.

When they were younger as in from aged 7 and upwards we would visit our local maybe five times a year with them on a Sunday from about 3pm until 9pm and then get chippy on the way home. Kids loved it.

I think if it's not a regular thing and children are happy then it's not a problem.

Yep you’re right there and I agree with it . Pubs do get bit of a bad reputation sometimes for the wrong reasons . It’s not the pub I’m concerned with it’s the amount being drunk and frequency that’s all

So you're going to the pub with them, or you're just there at the same time?

It makes a difference. If it's your child, it's your business. If it isn't, it likely is not your business.

WaltzingWaters · 29/08/2023 12:59

I used to love going to the pub with my parents and friends as a kid. Great memories. I’ll happily take my child to a pub too provided it’s a family friendly one and not too rowdy.
Provided it’s a family friendly pub, the adults aren’t drunk and have supervision of the kids it’s fine.

SuperiorM · 29/08/2023 13:05

It’s not a red flag and bandying those phrases about is really bad form if all you are talking about is a few trips to the pub

WandaWonder · 29/08/2023 13:12

Are there any red flags left in the world or are they all being used up?

I do wonder if people deliberately look for something they can get judgemental, I mean 'concerned' about

Riapia · 29/08/2023 13:21

If I don’t take my kids to the pub how am I supposed to find my way home at closing time when I’m pissed.
😉😁😁😁

Phos · 29/08/2023 13:33

As a once off, every day or almost every day doesn't seem very fair on the kid.

We take our 6 year old to the local occasionally. We have food, she loves on all the dogs (with permission), has a word with the owner who loves kids and has a go on the karaoke.
