to think my son shouldn't get wet in the rain just because he is a boy?

RANT ALERT:

A few weeks ago I went to Sainsbury's, while I was there I went to look for a raincoat for DS (10 months). They had two pink swirly ones, nothing appropriate for a boy. When I was paying, I asked about this, and was told "we don't have any. I don't know whether we'll be getting any in, we aren't told what's coming with each delivery".
Well I wasn't impressed but Sainsbury's only has a couple of ailes for all clothes so fair enough.
Today I went to Asda which has a huge children's clothes section. There was a whole stand dedicated to girls coats, with 3 or 4 raincoats, so I looked for the equivalent stand for boys, but couldn't find it. At the till I asked, and was told if we had any they'd be over there (bit I'd already walked through 20 times). They're probably not in yet. "When will you be getting some in?" "Dunno" "Well how can I find out?" "You can't, we aren't told what comes in every order"
Aaaargh! There must be a conspiracy surely, to get little boys wet?

Girlswear buyers get much bigger budgets than boyswear as well, so can buy a lot more......hence aisles of lovely girls clothes, and the odd limp jogging pant for boys

StealthPolarBear · 01/03/2008 21:45

They have separate buyers?
I imagined someone with a checklist "Waterproof - girl, yellow flowers. Waterproof - girl, white flowers. Waterproof - boy, ....ooh hang on, what's that, that's lovely, Waterproof boy, Waterproof, girl, pink flowers"

the 'My little slapper' outfits even it out a bit thought.

I know the camo gear for boys gets grim, but some of the girls clothing is positivly repulsive

StealthPolarBear · 01/03/2008 21:48

NAB, thank you, that's very kind of you
(, meant to write that 3 posts ago!) but I'll definitely find something, this is more of a rant about the inequality. It does sound very cute though, that sort of thing would be ideal!
I've had a look on ebay, couldn't see anything at the moment but will keep looking! I'll also look in Mothercare next time I'm there. As someone else pointed out he doesn't do a lot of walking in the rain but I think he will need one when he is walking and starts nursery.

See, I do hate some of the sludge coloured offerings for little boys, but at least he is demading Power Rangers and not Slutz

StealthPolarBear · 01/03/2008 21:53

at the moment my LO isn't demanding anything - I get to do the choosing, I think I need to make the most of it!

Tchibo do a good waterproof jacket.

They don't stock it all the time, it comes in about twice a year, I think.

brimfull · 01/03/2008 21:56

h&m had nice ones for boys

fizzbuzz · 01/03/2008 22:07

Seperate buyers, plus assistants, and various hangers on for all different age groups, AND divisional heads of boys and girls wear

Emprexia · 01/03/2008 23:22

Tesco and Mothercare both do practical coats and bathrobes for boys.

hatwoman · 01/03/2008 23:36

most strange that girls get raincoats and not boys. as I have often commented here before the girls can't get practical shoes (to go with said raincoats). net result - boys in practical shoes but getting wet heads. girls nice and dry but soaking feet in their party shoes

Flibbertyjibbet · 01/03/2008 23:45

As a mother of two boys I agree completely about the greater choice for girls - I had to ASK an assistant in Peacocks the other week for the boys stuff and it was in one teeny corner!
I suspect though that these raincoats for girls are just fashion items and will not actually keep much rain out! Unlike my boys in their matching parkas, and sensible shoes.
Er, thats the parkas match each other, not that they each have matching coat-and-shoe combos

No worries, SPB.

hippipotami · 03/03/2008 19:42

SPB - I saw some lovely boys zip up macs (the ones that fold into thier own pouch I think) in Sainsbury's today.

They are navy blue with a little pale blue car on (or was it a plane?), a zip, a hood, started at sice 9months, and it cost £6.

The lady was unpacking them and hanging them onto the rail, so it looks like they are new in!

Apologies if you have already sorted this...

colditz · 05/03/2008 17:02

i have those Sainburies macs, they do fold into their own pouch and are very nice -not every so waterproof but good enough.

spicemonster · 05/03/2008 17:11

In my (admittedly limited) experience, there is not nearly so much choice when it comes to boys clothes. Only thing that makes me wish I'd had a girl

JodieG1 · 05/03/2008 17:16

I found a lovely blue, fluffy bathrobe for ds1, it has a hood and is very soft. Got a pink one for dd and they both came from boots.
