To withdraw offer on flat

We've just had an offer accepted on a flat which ticks every box in terms of size, location etc. It's the full first floor of a period conversion and the bottom floor is another flat. When viewing I noticed that there were ashtrays with 100s of cig ends in the neighbour's part of the garden, which would be under our bedroom. DP jogged past yesterday and there was music pumping out. He could hear it from other side of the road, with all windows shut. The blinds are always shut. I tried calling in today to say hi but no answer. I'm starting to get party house vibes. Am I being paranoid? Wwyd??

Yes @AlmostAJillSandwich , all weekdays just up to 4.45. Nice catch! Also just found out there's a massive development happening across the street from early 2024 so it'll be a total building site for at least a year! Bullet dodged on a couple of fronts I think..

I would pull out.
I am a smoker and wouldn't want someone smoking under my bedroom

Flats should be rented. Not bought.
Def don't buy this one.

Just flats or all properties?
Is this a communist type thing?
Should they be allocated too?

IvorTheEngineDriver · 28/08/2023 17:06

Pull out now. If they ask why tell them what you told us.

The stress of this will cause major issues for your health.

Avoid at all cost.

I think withdrawing your offer is a good idea. Nothing more miserable than shit neighbours. Just shows how important visiting at different times of day/evening is. Bullet dodged!

A friend of mine put in an offer on a wonderful flat a few years ago. She went along one weekend as she just wanted to check distance from the bus stop and a few other things about the neighbourhood..

By chance she bumped into the current tenant of the flat she was buying and he warned her not to buy. He said the neighbours were real party animals, they lived in the country during the week but often had parties that went on all weekend! I think they were well known because they had been on some tv show (may have been Gogglebox) and were friends with Nigel Farage 😮. He and his family couldn't wait to move.

She withdrew the offer double quick...

Definitely withdraw.
You have made no commitments until a contract is signed (unless you are in Scotland). So it's totally ok to change your mind but the longer you leave it the more unkind it is so please act swiftly and let them know asap.

As much as I feel for the seller - withdraw. We sold our house with similar neighbours - detached house but joined gardens. They were never too bad, but the music and weed smoking was always bad on hotter days and we knew summer would be a nightmare. We were so relieved they weren't in when our buyer came for viewings!

I would pull out. DH and I will viewed a house once, looked like a quiet cul de sac so we offered and it was accepted. However we went back a few times afterwards and there were SO many cars parked everywhere, including the same car that was repeatedly practically parked over what would be our drive, so we pulled out. It’s always a good idea to recce the house and area at different times of day!

Locutus2000 · 28/08/2023 20:15

I've lived in a few flats. Blinds down all day and loud music at any time would have me heading for the hills.

I hate being a drama llama but in this case, run. Flats are either wonderful or horrible and it's all down to the neighbours.

mumda · 28/08/2023 20:59

MerryBeard · 28/08/2023 16:35

Why's that?

My experience is that flats have many more problems than houses with neighbours and neighbour related issues.
A simple up and down has fewer problems but getting stuck with leasehold issues, repairs, communal areas and all the other issues that come with this sort of property.

If you own you get stuck with bad neighbours. You can't sell without declaring a problem.

Cladding is a huge issue on many flats. Building improvements cost a huge amount.

The higher the number of properties generally the higher the risk of at least one horrific neighbour. And if you don't have one then it's you.

Foot noise, leaks, poor building management are on top of dealing with multiple people who have different lifestyles to you.

GrumpyPanda · 28/08/2023 21:07

Would make me wonder if that's why they're selling.
