To break into new neighbours house *serious question, NOT trolling*

Name change as I don’t want neighbours to recognise me😭

I have a cat who has a bit of a reputation on our street for forcing his way into neighbours homes by breaking open their cat-flaps to steal their pets food. He’s been doing it for years, not much I can do about it besides keeping him in which he would hate. Anyway….

Here is the problem..

This afternoon I realised I hadn’t seen him for nearly 24 hours (very unusual for him). I went out into the street to look for him when I spotted the bloody buggar in the window of the house two doors down!!!
This house was recently bought by a couple who are living elsewhere while they are renovating it. I have briefly spoken to this couple once, and they mentioned they have cats, so I assumed they have already had a cat-flap installed which he has broken into.

I was really confused why he hadn’t come back out, so I peered through their front window and spotted the catflap which he must have entered through. It’s one of those “smart” catflap brands which only opens if the cat has the right microchip. So he’s managed to get in, but now he can’t get out as his microchip isn’t unlocking it. I can see his muddy scratch marks on their newly painted wall besides the catflap, so he’s obviously been trying to get back out 😩😩

So here’s the even bigger problem…

As i’ve said, the couple who own the house are living elsewhere while renovating it. So there is nobody here to let him back out. I usually see them visit the house every week or so but I don’t know when they will be here next and he has already been inside for around 24 hours.

I’ve already spoken to all of the neighbours and nobody has contact details for them. I did think I could contact the estate agents who their house was on the market with to try and get their contact details but as it is the bank holiday they won’t be open until Tuesday - which means he will have been trapped for 72 hours inside their house.

What should I do?! Do I try and break in, get my cat and then secure the property as best I can and explain what happened when they are next here? That sounds like a really bad start to a relationship with them but then my cats trapped inside, presumably without water?!

It's their cat . They must know if the cat can get In or out.
Leave it
It's not your cat or your business

Except it is OPs cat. Did you read a different OP to everyone else?

Post food and water through the letterbox?
Have you tried a post on Nextdoor/local FB group asking if anyone can put you in touch with the owners?
If they're having work done is there a company sign displayed? They likely wouldn't give you the details of the house owner but could pass your details onto them.

I wouldn't make their absence quite so known to the public 😬

Goodness me how on earth is it possible to get the context of the thread so very wrong!

Notjustabrunette · 27/08/2023 19:09

Can you post food through the letter box? I’m wondering if there’s a way to get water to him via the letter box too?

Contact the police. They may be able to trace the owners.

How on earth would they be able to do that when none of the neighbours know anything about the folk. 🙄

It's so much easier if you just read the post before replying.

Does the estate agent have a shop? If so the police will have an emergency contact for them.

I think this is your best bet and will avoid you being accused of breaking in. You don’t know anything about the new neighbours and how they’ll react to you being on their premises.

butteringthestairs · 27/08/2023 19:12

So is the flap at the inside end of the tunnel or the outside end? Can you reach it? It should swing towards you if you can use something to get a purchase on it. A blob of blutack might do the trick or one of those suction hooks you get on those soap trays you stick in the shower.

Oh of course how silly of me. How could the police possibly have access to records of who the house belongs to.... How do you think they verify addresses to make sure people are telling the truth? 🙄

TheBestUsernamesAreGone · 27/08/2023 19:13

Our neighbours had to break out catflap once to rescue their cat. Similar situation. We understood.

It's bank holiday. They won't be there till Tuesday. The cat has already been there 24hrs.

I'm going to keep posting until
PPs stop being drama llamas and have some sense, it's a cat not a kidnapped child ffs

Can we stop with EA, Rspca, Police, SM, has nobody got a brain here, break the feckin catflap and stop the stupid suggestions, it's not rocket science.

FML, no, the police will not have an OOH number for the bloody estate agent!

If people really think the police are all knowing, no fucking wonder everyone thinks the police are shite when they can click their fingers and get something fixed / someone contacted 🙄

Mummapenguin20 · 27/08/2023 19:17

Your cat is a beauty x

Bluestoat · 27/08/2023 19:17

I’ve got a chip cat flap through a brick wall. You can set it to only certain chipped cats in and out. The manual said for example if you needed to keep a cat in for treatment etc. therefore it could be not allowing him out. However- force still works! Look for a little grey peg holding the flap in place.

Proudgypsy · 27/08/2023 19:18

To be honest it think you're absolutely out of order to know that your cat does this and not give a shit because there's "nothing you can do about it".

If I bought a new house and came back to cat piss, freshly painted walls ruined and a smashed in (probably expensive if it's smart) cat flap then I'd be absolutely furious.

Sort your cat out FFS.

LillyBugg · 27/08/2023 19:18

If it's through a tunnel and you can't reach it then just get a broom handle and break it that way. Just cover the cost.

pickleandcheese · 27/08/2023 19:20

Shameless place marking to see the outcome of this. Your cat is gorgeous btw.

NeedTheSeaside · 27/08/2023 19:20

ReviewingTheSituation · 27/08/2023 18:37

Even if you can get hold of the EA, they shouldn't give out contact details - I'm sure that would count as confidential info, and people could make up all sorts of stories!

@ReviewingTheSituation

🙄🙄🙄

they can ring the owners!

Edited

They don't just have all the knowledge.

You need a piece of useful data to start off with, like a number plate for a car - that gives you the registered keeper, the insurance company if it's insured and named drivers on the policy. They can look for cars registered to a specific address, but they need a CRIME INVESTIGATION to be allowed to look at the datasets. This is not a criminal investigation.

If the owners of this house are renovating and staying elsewhere the likelihood of them registering their car and insurance at this address is slim to none.

Police can check the voters register - the complete one, not the redacted one - but again, need to justify looking at it, and again, the likelihood of the owners changing their voters record to this address is likely nil.

Police don't have OOH access to the Land Registry records or any access to household insurances. Or OOH access to the estate agents.
