Not to have a garden?

AIBU to think moving to a house we've found, which needs work, but for a number of reasons is a good price for us - is a good idea despite having no outdoor space? Would it be hard to resell in a few years once we've added value to it without a garden? I have two very young children who would benefit from a garden - but in an area with plenty of outdoor walks and parks - is this necessary? Would you buy a nice period house, newly renovated, but without outdoor space? Thank you for your thoughts. House buying is really tough at the moment and we can't afford to get this wrong.

I could see the potential for resale in a small two bed property for older people who may not want the hassle of keeping a garden but in 5/6 bedroom house I imagine it's going to be hard. I assume it's very heavily discounted to reflect the lack of outdoor space.

i don’t think this is the house for you. Unless there really are no other options.

It’s a decent price, despite having 5 bedrooms, because it has no garden. Whatever you do to it, however nice you make it, you won’t get the return you are seeking. Large family homes without any outside space are just not desirable. You could find yourself stuck there, unable to sell at a price that would enable you to move on.

Good luck in finding something else.

It would really limit who’d buy it and also limit the price
Period houses can be very expensive to renovate

if your looking to make money in a house this isn’t the one

Depends on what is normal in the area isn’t it? I prefer a small garden. Low maintenance but have the space for drying clothes, bbq, paddling pool, a table. This does not need to be big at all.

If it’s a prime city centre location, it could be normal to not have a garden?

Thank you all. That's me told! Just to say there are positives which are too outing which I haven't gone into - things which we would be able to fix that others would baulk at - which is also why it's affordable. But it was really the garden thing I wanted advice on. I mean, I knew the answer really - but thanks for confirming! Back to the drawing board!

I live in a row of town houses without gardens (town centre location) and it’s mostly ok but we all miss outside space. I might consider doing it again if there was a balcony but not without any outside space.

gabsdot · 28/08/2023 13:08

I don'#t necessarily need a garden but I would have to have some outdoor space for a BBQ, sitting outside and putting out the clothes dryer.
An apartment balcony would be fine with me.
But with kids a garedn is so handy, you can just pop them outside to play and lock the door 😁

No, I wouldn't buy without a garden through choice.

I lived in a flat without a garden for 13 years. When I came to upgrade to a house my no 1 requirement was a garden.

Mountainhowl · 28/08/2023 13:42

If I was buying a house a garden would be an absolute must. We rent and have a tiny concrete yard not big enough to do anything in (about 1.5x2.5m), my parents have a smallish garden but staying there with my DC is so nice, getting up and making a brew then sitting in the garden watching them play is lovely

Doingmybest12 · 28/08/2023 13:49

I think if you are on a limited budget and you need living space and can't afford a garden still consider it if you have access to parks etc. You are moving from a flat so maybe it's a step up. Just beware of putting too much money into it and accept that you'll sell it to the next person cheaply and it might take a while and you might have limited interested people.

Any way to add a roof terrace or one of those Velux balconies?
