AIBU to consider job move within the organisation?

How soon is too soon to move jobs?

I started a new job in January. I love it - I love the people, the work and the flexibility. My boss is fantastic. The salary isn't amazing.

There is a position that has opened up in another part of the organisation (it is a massive organisation, I don't worry about managers talking they've probably never met). It is still in my field but it is a 25% rise in basic pay, and I'm definitely qualified. There would be slightly less travel but not as much flexibility over school holidays - my current position focuses on the education sector. I don't get holidays off or anything but it's quiet during school holidays.

I'm not desperate for the extra money now, but we will need to remortgage next year and this kind of rise would massively help. I'm not sure how often these opportunities arise - I haven't seen anything similar since I started.

That said, I've only been there for 8 months. I know I filled a hole in the team which if I left would create loads of extra work for them again. While it would be a good move for me I would feel massively guilty. AIBU to put myself first and try for this position? Or should I stick at it a bit longer and look out for other possibilities next year, or even the year after?

I’d just apply, you’ve nothing to lose. If you get to the point of being offered the role you can find out more about the flexibility and decide if it’s something that will work for you right now.

Have a chat with your manager, assuming they're approachable.

I've worked for the same organisation for 12 years. I've changed role five times.

I don't currently manage staff but when I did I would always encourage them to progress.

Hi @Birdie8989
Definitely go for it, apply for the other job, don't feel guilty! Hope you get the job x
