To speak to my new neighbours about their driving/speeding?

We live down a rural private lane, on the site of an old farm, where there are a small number of properties.

The road to reach the properties is a unadopted lane, that has a 90 degree blind bend, which all existing residents are very respectful of. The lane is also used frequently by dog walkers, cyclist, joggers, families etc as leads onto a popular canal path, as well as being populated by a lot of wildlife including hedgehogs.

We have always had a problem with speeding delivery drivers who don't know the lane, but a new property has been built on the farm site, and unfortunately the owners consistently drive too fast round this bend too - our house is just set back from it and have witnessed several near misses.

I have just seen the wife roar down the lane and round the corner, dust flying, for the umpteenth time and feel something needs to be said. Part of me thinks let them learn the hard way, but we have some elderly residents on the farm and am so worried they will get hit.

The options I am considering:

  • speaking to them directly (but am crap at confrontation)
  • writing a letter expressing our concerns (cowardly but possibly easier)
  • erecting some sort of signage eg 'Slow down, blind bend signs'

As the lane is unadopted there is no point in speaking to the council, but if I had the money I would love to put speed bumps in myself !!!!!

What would you do?

Thanks

You could write a note and put it through all your neighbours doors and include your self as well - 1 letter addressed to all of you - something like dear residents of all down blind bend road at the old farm site ect please don’t drive like wallys.

that way everyone is reminded - no one is singled out and you can legitimately say you got one this not making it obvious who it came fro

ActDottie · 25/08/2023 18:24

I’d do the signage and get one that says elderly and children around etc.

LaurieFairyCake · 25/08/2023 18:32

Fuck all that

Make a HUMP - will cost you about £20 with pre mixed concrete/gravel etc

Do it in the DEAD of night - all the way across the road with the white arrows on it so it WILL be seen

Council will not care you've done it but NEVER admit to it to anyone 😂

You could set up a fake memorial site, with plastic flowers, teddies, half deflated balloons and random crosses pushed into the ground. Big banners “ Remembering XXXXX , taken too soon” “ Sleep tight forever XXXXX,” “Speeding kills”

Oh my god 😆

Oh gosh, just speak to them! You are setting yourself up for falure by saying you 'don't like confrontation' - no-one does, which is why most people just talk to others.

It doesn't have to be a big deal, just pop over and explain about how often there are near-misses there. Lots of drivers like this literally don't consider the consequences, hence being crap drivers.

I'd also add my concern for wildlife etc, and say how scared I am when I am walking on that road. Then they would just think I am a harmless animal-loving wandering hippy lady, and wouldn't hold it against me.

The way you show up in life really affects how people respond to you - when you show up expecting a confrontation, that's telegraphed to others and they become confrontational. When you go over intending to have a helpful chat and share your own concerns with like-minded but unaware people, then that is how it is received.

And if that doesn't work, yes, the 'massive speed bump in the night' sounds a great idea!

Are they actually speeding? Or just going faster than you think is safe?

There are no speed limits on private roads

LaurieFairyCake · 25/08/2023 19:24

The reason I'm suggesting a HUMP without talking to them is that if you talk to them and nothing changes then you'll be really pissed off

And then they would know YOU built the hump 😂

It'll be a heck of a lot more awkward if they kill someone

Particularly for the person killed.

Noodlewave · 25/08/2023 19:41

But on the plus side, it might be a cyclist
(this is Mumsnet after all).

I think this is a really good idea!

Until it causes an accident and the person who built it gets sued...

I'd approach with all neighbours including the new ones, addressing it generally not directed at new people. As you can say that you have witnessed some scary near misses, you wondered about putting a sign up and link to the one you've mentioned.
Do you have email or WhatsApp contacts to message as a group? Or will you all be meeting in person socially at some point soon?

This

A letter to all neighbours saying about recent near misses and recommending the erection of signs. Speak as in you care about the safety of the whole community
Could also add "if anyone has any further suggestions please do let us know".

Lilithlogic · 25/08/2023 20:34

The thing is that in the awful event of an accident blame all the signage, fake graves etc as an excuse for distracting them
