Here’s a confusing GCSE question!!

If a child was to retake a gcse as they were three marks off a pass ( because of the grade boundaries )
if they retook it in august …. Would the grade boundaries for that paper be the same as the 2023 June boundary or does a new paper create a new boundary ?
if so we may go for it !! Because logic tells ( although I can’t explain the logic?!) that those retaking are likely to make the boundary lower ?

New paper, new boundaries. In my subject (English) the Nov Lang papers are sometimes a bit more accessible but grade boundaries do vary depending on raw marks.

New papers are all new boundaries, but they calculate the November (I assume you mean November not August) ones differently I think because of the demographics taking them.
I believe they do something along the lines of look at the candidates' SATS results to give an idea what the spread should be, among other things.

You can't retake a GCSE in August. For maths and English language, there is a sitting in November, otherwise the next chance to sit it is next June. Each exam sitting will have its own grade boundaries.

They have to retake all papers, not just one- they can't "bank" some of their papers from a prior sitting.

There are only retakes for Maths and English gcses in November.

The grade boundaries would be different as they would be adjusted to reflect the relative difficulty of the paper and the UCI data relating to those taking the November paper.

New paper = new grade boundaries.

If it's only 3 marks off then can't you appeal? When I sat mine, I was one mark off the next grade in science so the school submitted it for appeal and my grade ended up being bumped up.

So sounds like we are aiming for nov. I could ask for a remark, but I’ve heard a 1percent chance of marks changing and typically this year the rules have been tightened !
