Had my 6 monthly check up today with the dentist and she casually mentioned that one of my front teeth is likely to have to come out in the next few (maybe up to 10) years.

Background - I was dropped on my mouth when I was 2 and they thought the baby tooth had been knocked out but it subsequently grew back down having just been knocked back into the gum. When the adult tooth then grew it was twisted round at an angle and yellow as it had no enamel on it due to the trauma.

The tooth is currently straightened and crowned and is OK but the dentist pointed out a tiny line at the top which seems to be on my own tooth which is just showing underneath the crown. I'm absolutely terrified. She said if the extraction is properly managed I won't be left for any time with no front tooth. She also said that it's possible the bone wouldn't be strong enough to take an implant. I'm in my 40s, I don't really want a denture. Has anyone had anything similar that can reassure me please? Is it an awful procedure? I remember the injection in the area from having it crowned and that was not pleasant. I know it's not an immediate issue but I'm a worrier and I suffer with anxiety.

At worst you could have a tiny 1 tooth denture. Like I did.

Sorry, I don't know the answer to your question although I have had a dental implant which needed quite a bit of work on the root canal in advance. It wasn't the most fun thing ever but it was perfectly OK, and I am a bit of a wimp! More generally, though, I would suggest that you ask your dentist for a referral to someone who specialises in implants so that you can get an expert opinion. My implant specialist was able to scan my jawbone a few times to check that I was gaining enough bone density to take the implant. (I had lost some density due to an infection, but it did build up again.)

I had a tooth which had to come out (the dentist said it would need to come out at some point, but she suggested I should get it done before my daughter was 1 because of the free dental treatment!). I had to have a denture until everything settled, but I soon got used to it. I did then get a bridge - which might be an option if the teeth either side are okay. With either, nobody could tell by looking that I didn't have perfectly normal teeth, apart from DH as the denture is supposed to be taken out at night.

A big yes to being referred to implant specialist. I had one done and it was painless and a breeze compared to anything done prior to that.
Also they have a powder which they insert in your jaw which grows into actual (artificial?) bone. Bridges do damage the teeth on both sides, of which they told me they rather wouldn't anymore. Implant technology has taken a big leap
It is good you already know now, so you can start saving for the procedure. Then it will not really hurt financially either:)

They can put artificial bone in to build up the area. Would she be the one doing it? If not youd want to see a periodontist.

You'd need a scan first to see how much bone is there. If you can afford an implant that's the closest thing to a real tooth there is xx

I have two missing front teeth attached by bridges to crowns on the adjacent teeth. You wouldn't know to look and the procedure, whilst tedious and not cheap, was painless.

Longagonow96 · 24/08/2023 22:04

After the injections, obviously. I loathe dentist visits but if you find a good one it helps.

Longagonow96 · 24/08/2023 22:06

Had to have bridges as I grind my teeth, you may be OK for an implant as suggested above

So I had to have a front tooth out 6 months ago. Tbh I was very distressed about it. They gave me a partial denture. It looks fine when in but it falls out all the time and I can't eat with it without loads of fixident.

Tbh I was very upset when it was out. Rarely are for week. Keep crying. Seems like an over reaction but I hated what I saw in the mirror.

I had surgery to have an impact fitted today. Very brutal tbh but over with in an house. I didn't quite have enough bone in one area so I needed a bone graft which has also been done. Now it has to heal and ill carry on with my denture until the tooth is fitted in 3 months time. Apparently there is about a 3% rejection rate at this stage and a 5% rejection rate over all.

It's cost me about £3500 in total which I got on dental finance through the surgery. You need to see an implant specialist really.

Another option was a fixed bridge but I opted for the implant as apparently a fixed bridge damages the teeth it is fixed too.

It will be ok I promise. Honestly I was so so upset but I've got though it.

I just had one, a crown hooked onto the back of the next front tooth, after my front crowned tooth died, you couldn’t tell, put your faith in your dentist, preferably a younger one, who will be more up to date with modern methods. Cost 250£

TeefyMcTeeferson · 24/08/2023 22:41

Thank you all. No my own dentist has said they don't do implants there. I didn't know they could build up the bone so that's good to know, and I've been a bit scared to Google. It all came as a bit of a shock today tbh as I'm not having problems with the tooth and this was just a bog standard check up.

Thanks so much for the lengthy reply. I'm sorry you're going through this. So you've had the thing fitted for the implant to fit onto? When you say it was brutal, dare I ask? Were you left at any time without a tooth? X
