WWYD work & redundancy

Firstly, I know this isn’t an AIBU but trying my luck here.

I’ve been working in the same very large company since I started working and have managed to move up the ranks. Recently though, the direction from the top has been a bit hit and miss and I’m finding myself banging my head against an imaginary brick wall when they announce things (like flexible working changes)

I’ve just found out that my already stretched team is being reduced by 60%, they’re keeping what is my role (there’s currently two of us) and creating a role the grade below. We’ll lose two admin roles and one senior role to me.

I have two options, re-apply for my role and be up against a senior person and peer and either get the role or be placed at a lower grade or throw it all in and take my redundancy pay.

I’ve been with the company for many years so the redundancy package is quite healthy, not enough to live on but would give breathing space to find something new.

My fear is not being out of work in so long and not knowing what the job market is like and a setting myself up for failure?

so WWYD?

BU - Yes, you’d be stupid to consider leaving a company right now
NBU - change is good and you should try something new.

Take the redundancy. It's unpleasant to be in a pick me race. Plus it'll be a shit show after. Take stock, look around and go for it.

Check the terms of the restructure/redundancy. In a lot of cases you have 6 month trial period in your new role in which time you could decide to take the redundancy package. If this is the case for you, then there is no harm in keeping your options open and trying out the new structure.

Thank you for responding. That is exactly my thinking right now but it’s felt like a scary situation being unemployed and didn’t know if I was being stupid making that decision.

Thanks! I’ve looked at this, if I apply and get the role then I can’t ‘trial’ it as it’s technically my role (with additional responsibilities) so would leave with nothing.

If I don’t apply but they offer a role outside of my field and I trial this and don’t agree it’s suitability then I walk away with less than 50% of the package.

If I don’t apply and they offer VR then I get full package.

I was made redundant from a company that I'd work at for nearly 30 years. It was scary as I'd not long bought a house on my own.

I paid to have my CV updated and joined LinkedIn. I had plenty of interviews and secured a few roles within 2 weeks of finishing at my previous job.

It's been over 3 years now and I'm very happy in my new position.

LinkedIn in a great networking platform, I've got recruiters added as people I know and still get random messages asking if I'd be interested in other roles.

Have a look what's out there and then maybe decide.

Good luck!

Thank you, I really appreciate you sharing your experience.

It’s great to hear it worked out for you too and gives me hope!
