To be pissed off that the only financially viable profession nowadays appeares to be banking?

As a disinterested teen, my dad arranged for me to do work in a bank...i found it exceptionally dull and I really hated Maths at the time. Turns out I should have pursued it as it one of the only professions that allows people to afford a decent quality of life nowadays.
I love my job in the nhs but may have to leave health care as I need to afford to live.
I will encourage dd to go into finance but it shouldn't be like this should it?

Yanbu-other professions should pay properly.
Yabu- banking is the best paid career choice...more fool you for not pursuing it!

It's not well aid at the lower levels of retail banking. That person on the till won't be on much more than minimum wage.

AllyCart · 24/08/2023 14:11

I think you'll get a skewed response to the vote as the criteria you've given don't really align with the title.

I'd say YABU to think banking is the only profession that pays well enough to allow a decent quality of life.

This

public service was never going to be make you rich

Obbydoo · 24/08/2023 14:14

Top marks OP! This is a very novel approach to the 'woe is me, I work for the NHS' bollox we have to incessantly endure.

Breezycheesetrees · 24/08/2023 14:15

Don't be daft, you can have a comfortable and lovely life in all sorts of professions. If you want to be stupidly rich that's a different matter; plenty of people don't actually want that.

Lasttimehonest · 24/08/2023 14:15

There are loads and loads of other professions that pay properly, very well indeed - tech industry for example., not just banking. Also certain Public Sector jobs pay very well - NHS consultants on 100k plus and deputy heads and head teachers, Project Management jobs in local government I have seen pay as well as PM jobs in private sector - £50k plus. However, in response to your question - YANBU as of course all professions SHOUlD pay properly.

Alwaysdecorating · 24/08/2023 14:16

Yes yabu.

But what do you mean by ‘banking’ that’s a really broad term.

VisionsOfSplendour · 24/08/2023 14:16

What do you mean by "banking" that's not a profession

Whatever it is its not the only viable profession, you must know that only a small minority of people have jobs that are anything to do with banking

MeltedBunion · 24/08/2023 14:16

Surely a lot of the ££ is in tech… anyone I know who is earning well is in tech industry

I’m in healthcare and have no chance of ever earning what I would really like to. I’m sure people think I am loaded from my title, I’m not. I just about manage to pay bills in a modest lifestyle

Pebblepaint · 24/08/2023 14:17

I worked in a bank and did quite well when I moved to corporate banking, but branch banking doesn't pay well.

What the bank did do really well was training and personal development. I've changed career completely now but use what they taught me daily.

Brahumbug · 24/08/2023 14:18

Most bank staff are quite poorly paid, and you are unreasonable for using disinterested!

Harrythehappypig · 24/08/2023 14:19

Do you mean investment banking? I don’t think working in a bank branch is a notably high paying role.

cruffinsmuffin · 24/08/2023 14:20

I feel like perhaps you're thinking of traders or people who work in city officers, rather than people who work in actual banks?

As someone who works in finance (albeit not in a bank) I find it wild how many people think it's some sort of catch all highly paid career that just anyone can do for a good standard of life.

Konfetka · 24/08/2023 14:21

My particular bugbear is the City nabbing the brightest science graduates.

Yeah I know money talks but could you have found anything more obscene to do with your brilliant brain?

Strugglingtodomybest · 24/08/2023 14:22

There are loads of jobs that pay well, so yabu to say that only banking does, particularly as you haven't specified what you mean by banking.

malificent7 · 24/08/2023 14:22

Well it's not woe is me ..i work for NHS....i got paid shit in private healthcare too! Hence I am hoping to get into AI which does have positive implications for healthcare.

Ridiculous outlook on life. Lots and lots of professional jobs pay well with hard work and persistence. Your choice to go into the nhs!

bingoitsadingo · 24/08/2023 14:22

you are being ridiculous. I know plenty of people doing well for themselves financially and very few of them are in banking. There are a huge number of industries aside from finance and healthcare! Even in finance, there are a huge variety of roles that don't need you to be "good at maths".

Some other ideas:
software engineering
data science
project management
sales
recruitment
pharmaceuticals
law
'physical' engineering (huuuuge variety here, biotech, aerospace, infrastructure, ...)
product design
I could go on and on...

Encourage your daughter to be curious, to develop skills, to try and identify what changes are coming in the world and what she can contribute to making things happen... that is how to be successful.

HakunaMatiÅ‚da · 24/08/2023 14:24

Working in a bank <> banking.

Pebblepaint · 24/08/2023 14:24

There's money to be made in any profession if you're good enough/want to get to the top.

Headteachers on on well over £100k in most secondaries. In London close to that in primaries. Just an example of a well paid public sector role because that's the one I know.

Since I left education I'm working for a charity on what I think is a decent salary for what I do (sensible workload and low stress), £70k.

Thatladdo · 24/08/2023 14:37

Id be interested to hear your definition of "financially viable" to be honest.

rockpoolingtogether · 24/08/2023 14:40

Tech , accountancy, big London law firms all pay very very well

yogasaurus · 24/08/2023 14:41

Investment banking is well-paid, branch banking is not.
There are lots of other, well-paid professions, yabu.

Yes, this..

You're being a bit silly, both because entry level "banking" (the term encompasses a lot of different jobs!) isn't necessarily particularly well paid, and lots of other careers are "financially viable" whatever that means.

Depending on what your expectations and needs are (which obviously vary hugely from person to person) working on the checkout in aldi can be "financially viable".

Bit of an odd post really

winelove · 24/08/2023 14:44

There are some people in the NHS who earn a lot of money. Like every other profession, I am sure they started much lower down (probably much duller jobs) and with hard work, training and taking every opportunity they have worked themselves into a higher paid position. Of course not everyone can become a head of a trust or CEO; so luckily there are many professions, careers out there that are somewhere in between.
