To ask for experiences of Manchester Metropolitan University?

Does anyone has any experiences of Manchester Metropolitan University? Long back story, but accommodation not an issue as DD can stay with a local family member (at least for first year) so it’s really advice on the uni itself. It seems to be a bit “looked down on” from what I see online, but I wonder if it’s compared to the Uni of Mcr? I didn’t go to university myself so not much help I’m afraid.

Any experiences welcome! Thank you

I didn’t mean to enable voting FFS. Well I suppose,

AIBU to think Man Met is not a good choice?
YANBU in thinking it IS a good choice?

does that make sense? You can see why I didn’t go to uni lol

Friends children have gone to ManMet and enjoyed it although you're right it is generally thought of as 'second division' compared to Uni of

My granddaughter went to Manchester Met, thoroughly enjoyed it and got a good degree. Not for a second did she feel like she was in a second class uni.

It’s one of the post-1992 universities “new universities” which some people look down on. A lot of that is snobbery. If she likes the course she should go for it! Better for her to do a course she likes at a university where she’ll be happy, than to go somewhere less suitable for her because of what other people think.

BadlydoneHelen · 24/08/2023 12:13

It's a good choice if it has a course she's interested in and she has the relevant grades. It generally has lower grade requirements than uni of Manchester for the same course so in this instance would generally be thought of as 'lesser'. It has other courses that aren't offered by more traditional RG universities so would be ranked 'higher' in those areas

There is still some, but not much, snobbery and I think you should probably go to the best University you can get into to, but that apart most universities are roughly the same.
You might find a specific course at some rather than others but it is not the University that is so important as the people - both the friends but also the teachers (professors and lecturers) you end up with. Even the best Universities have some poor teachers and even the best teachers don't gel with all students.
Find somewhere you think you will be happy/ flourish and then enjoy life without neglecting your degree - my advice to your DD.

It used to be Manchester School of Art (and has the lovely old building for that on the campus square). So there is a long history of arts based courses at that institution and the school of art was well thought of historically. It's hard to compare art / design courses with Russel group universities as so few of them offer them. DD is about to start at Man Met and it's her first choice because what she wants to do is unusual and the course there appears to have good links with industry which will be useful for a job later on hopefully. I think that many courses are a bit of a leap of faith really. Bluntly I'd prefer her to be going to a Russell group university but they don't offer what she wants to study and I'd rather she did a course that she was passionate about than attend somewhere for the sake of the name of the institution.

Thank you so much for advice! It is a BA Hons course which I think will be good.

Oxford Rd Manchester is chock full of buildings, wether they are student accomodation or uni buildings, last time I was down there I was unable to tell the difference between Man Uni and Man Met, they all meld into each other.
